I would like to use the Win 7 as a WhatsApp which can be called etc. from another WhatsApp ( Mobile phone ).
Downloaded the application from Download WhatsApp .
This would appear to turn the PC into a mirror of the mobile phone . I would like it to be an independent WhatsApp , just like any other phone .
Have I misunderstood all of this ?
Thanks .

Your understanding is correct, that's the way that WhatsApp is designed. It doesn't support computers at all, and as you've discovered, their computer version (as well as its web version) only mirrors a phone, and will even go offline if the pairing phone goes offline.

The closest you can do is by installing Android (in a virtual machine most likely) and installing the normal WhatsApp there. It still requires a separate phone number to work, though, using an already used one will disable the first one. It's purposely designed to be tighly coupled to phone numbers.
