Solved When fast forwaring a movie I notice the sound has trouble catching up

When I start a movie, that I have downloaded, and I use the progress bar t jump around within the movie; I notice that the sound seems to lag a bit. However, if I watch the movie normally there is no problem. Is this common?

I think we need a ton more info before we can answer. what player, how much ram, what kind of file, etc

Its not just a bit out of synch is it? Meaning Ok at the beggining but off from middle to end? or does it catch back up?


The file may be fragmented, in which case defragmenting may help.


Beyond that it depends how the encoder was set up. Things such as Min GOP and I frame settings effect seeking. If this is the case not much you can do other than recode.

Media Player Classic, 4GB Ram, .avi bit I think it's Xvid if you know what I mean.
The file is never out of sync if I just let it play from the start and If I fast forward a little bit. But once I fast forward to the middle or further that's when the audio doesn't match the video.

FYI, when I fast forward I click the progress bar at different points and fast-forward that way. See attached image

Same issues with Windows Media Player 12, VLC and Media Player Classic.

I have uninstalled VLC though.

Final Update:

I am using K Lite codec pack and Media Player classic only. I uninstalled the Divx player and VLC. I still have issues when I move around to different points in the movie but when I play the movie from the start, and don't jump around, everything is fine. I guess that's the best it's gonna be.

When I play .mp4 and m4v files, I am able to skip around with no issue.

any ideas why the Xvd (avi) files are the problem files?

You could try a different player and see if it has the same problem.

I use GOM player & never had a problem with the sound, I have however had problems with the sound on Media Player occasionally.

Aside from that, GOM plays a myriad of files.

You might want to check here, there are a number of reasons why AVI might not be playing right

Final Update:

I had my friend try the same files on a few others systems and he has the same issue. It must be the files alone or the way they were coded.
