Hello, i recently build a computer for my uncle, it has worked perfectly for months. But one day when he should write a mail he used the letter W and it opens Internet Explorer, iTunes and Windows help window.

This unusual phenomenon occurs everywhere not only in Windows Live Mail, but also at the desktop.

Anyone that has experience from this?

OS: Windows 7 x64

Hello and welcome to this forum. Check to see if maybe there's another key that's stuck and is causing this problem. Also go to Control Panel click on Region and Language select the Keyboards and Languages tab click on Change Keyboards and see what Keyboard is selected. If it's US keyboard try to add another one such as a UK one restart the computer and see if that helps and if it does try to go back to the US keyboard and if that then goes back to normal you can remove the UK entry

I have both looked at a stucked key, even drag my hand over every key to release a sticky key wich there was none. Iv'e tried to set a new keyboard in the control panel, what i've not tried is another keyboard, i only have access though VNC to control his computer.

Ask your uncle to try a different keyboard and if he doesn't have one to just buy a cheap one for testing

See if you have any Ease of Access programs running.Or any other Keyboard Shortcut Programs running in the system tray.....Still no Hope? Better Test using another Keyboard as mentioned above by "Shimshom"

Hi Laxxen, welcome to 7F! :)

It would be helpful if we could know the make and model of your Uncle's keyboard, most if not all keyboard shortcuts for Windows are two-key combinations, designed that way so as not to unnecessarily invoke a response. A single "hot-key" could be a setting peculiar to the brand of keyboard.

Does he have any pets that are allowed to be near the computer? A combination created by pet paws would be difficult to diagnose. Reinstalling the keyboard may be your only hope if this happened.

If you can't get another keyboard to test, you could try:

  • Running in Safe mode to see if the behaviour still exists. If it does or doesn't may tell us more.

  • Using a System Restore point to before the "one day" this started, depending on how far you go back you may have to at the least re-check Windows Updates.

  • Reinstall the keyboard, you will have to coach your Uncle through this because someone needs to be there to physically unplug and replug the keyboard.

  • Shutdown the machine. Unplug the keyboard; Have him make note of the receptacle used. Restart machine, after it reaches the desktop go into Device Manager to make sure there aren't any keyboards under Human Interface Devices (HID's) or Keyboards listed separately, if there are uninstall them then shut it down again. Plug keyboard back in, restart machine, allow Windows to install keyboard or use third-party drivers depending on what type keyboard you have. Test keyboard.
