I know that wallpapers are generally stored in system32/web/wallpaper, but where are the wallpaper scenes that come with the new Windows 7 themes get stored? They are not in the directory I listed above.

If anyone knows, can you tell me where to look?

Thanks
Steve

Desktop Pictures in .theme Files

Under your third reference I do find the themes, but they are DLLs or something similar. These hold the pictures that show up under the category "Desktop Backgrounds" in the Personalization CP.

I'd like to be able to select pictures from those 4 collections as well as from the Pictures Library category, to make my My Theme. The only way I've found to do this would be to collect all the pictures into the Pictures Library location, since it's the one that contains pictures rather than DLLs.

Is there any way to extract the pictures from the Windows Desktop Backgrounds DLLs (.themes) so they can be placed together with the ones in Picture Library?

The property sheet says the file opens with Windows Shell Common DLL?

Thanks so much for your help --

Blyneth's question asks exactly what I came to find. Does anyone know yet how to extract the pictures from the Windows Desktop Backgrounds DLLs? Even better, is there a way to select multiple folders when designating which pictures to use for a desktop slideshow?

If you go into themes hover over the photo a name like img0.jpg (main Win 7 wallpaper)
pops up. So search that and you find each theme has a folder with a name like

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-s..allpaper-landscapes_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_895c1fabae7e0073

THIS. THIS IN THE WORST WAY.

Windows 7 has so many farking things discombobulated and convoluted. Tasks that used to be simple, such as locating your desktops, now require extensive internet research.

Adjusting pane views and finding menu options in WMP 11 is utterly tough! And you can't roll back to WMP 10...

Registered to tell Microsoft these biatches! Microsoft, you done GOT TOLD!

Pictures from Themes

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but i found the images from the windows 7 themes in C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\ {ThemeName} .

Another way to view/save these wallpapers is to go to Personalize, click on Desktop Background at the bottom, a window displaying all the backgrounds for that theme will open, right click on the image you want, click OK to the Windows Security message that is displayed, right click menu will display, select Preview, the image will be displayed in Windows Photo Viewer (on my PC), select the File dropdown, select Make A Copy..., and save the image where ever you'd like.

Dudes, it's really simple.
On Windows Explorer, point to the C:\Windows directory, in the search box, type *.jpg. Right click, group by folder right-click view thumbnails.
c:\windows\web\windows\web\wallpaper\...
c:\windows\globalization\MCT\...

Forgot a step. Start>control panel> file and folder options
View tab, uncheck Hide system files.

Enjoy!

I think they would like the place of the actual pictures in the theme which are in:
C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper
The pictures for the themes are there and you can customize them as you please.

This is the simple answer

Add pics to themes: Copy and paste this in Win 7 search then open your folder and add or remove pictures as needed.

%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes
