Solved Where is the Java Update tab in the Java Control Panel?

I've been doing some reading about Java and how it relates to system security and vulnerability. Been thinking about removing it altogether, but not ready to do that just yet. I would at least like to make sure my Java is set to check for updates every day. However the Update tab is missing from the Java Control Panel.

I'm currently running Java SE 6 Update 33 (just updated today), and in Control Panel it says it's the 32-bit version. This is on a Win7 x64 machine. Do I need to get the 64 bit version?

Should I be using Java SE 6 Update 33, or Java SE 7u5?

Nevermind, I noticed that I had both SE 6 Update 20 and Update 33 listed in Uninstall Programs. After removing 20, the Update tab appeared. So I set it to check for updates daily, and then hit Update Now. Now it has installed SE 7u5, and did in fact uninstall SE 6 Update 33.

Also the 64-bit version is only for 64-bit browsers, which I never use because I've heard they don't work that great with many web pages.

Thanks for that info, I'm having the same problem but I do have to say that your information about 64 bit is very incorrect:shock:. In fact, I've had both and I wouldn't even consider going back to 32 bit O/S's.

I have 8GB of memory and couldn't run 30% of the best program s I have if I wasn't ale to access it. At least 20% of my programs are specifically made for 64 bit O/S's , (Loaded in "Program Files"), and run Sooooo much faster/better/smoother than my 32 bit versions did.

There are a lot of reasons for this but one of the primary is the fact that 64bit is able to access and use much more than the 4 gb max of a 32 bit. So all I'm saying here is that you've been totally misinformed, (I experienced no increase in problems when I went to 64bit), and you don't know what your missing.

I wasn't referring to 64-bit OS's. Indeed, Win7 x64 is IMHO the best operating system ever to come out of Micro$oft, IMHO. We run 12 to 16 GB workstations in our office running resource-intensive software.

My comments above were referring to 64-bit web browsers.

Patrick, you are correct, Java bitwise refers to browsers.
