Hi ,

I have been using windows 7 home premium for past two years in acer aspire 5738g, past weak i have restored my os to factory setting .. currently i didn't installed any third party programs except google chrome, because to learn how my pc works with pre installed softwares ...

so now i m downloading a video from youtube from a site. That site is asking me to install java ? i have previously used that same site also and when it had asked me to do the same in the past i did so without asking why i have to do so , because i m not bothered about what to install or not ? simply i followed instructions on screen whenever installing any softwares ,etc., i m only concerned about my usage with it never asked questions like what is it and why do i need it ?

so for past 3 years i never learned anything because i never asked questions ..

but since i have restored my lap few days back , now i want to know about what i m doing with my system , if not able to know technically atleast a basic idea of what i m doing and why i am doing that ?

and this is my first membership any forumn so far in my computing history, so i m not clear the term "reps " in forumn ..

but the current question i m asking is :

I m trying to download a video from youtube through a site(savevid.com) in google chrome browser . the site says

" To download this video, you need to install the Java plug-in. Click here to install the Java plug-in. After the installation is complete, click here to reload this page. "

Now i m thinking what is java plug in ? why do i need it ? if java is an essential software why my os is not provided with it ? or does it provided with it and i m not aware to use it ?

Hello Hari and welcome to Seven Forums.

Java is a special programming language that has been in use since 1995. A lot of games and websites and programs use Java. If you don't have it on your computer you won't be able to take advantage of the things that were created with Java. More info here:

What is Java and why do I need it?

Some computer manufacturers will include Java on any computer they sell. Other manufacturers don't. Since it's a free product anyone can install it at any time so it's no big deal if it's not on your machine. A lot of people wait until they come across something that needs Java and then they install it. That way you know you're getting the most up to date version. And speaking of up to date, because Java is so popular it is a big target for people who write viruses and other malware. So if you want to keep Java on your machine, make sure you keep it updated.

The original Java was written primarily for Internet Explorer. There was no such thing as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc. But as these new browsers became more popular, rather than re-writing the entire Java program for each one, the main program was modified for each browser. These modifications were called plug-ins because the user didn't have to do the downloading and installation. The browser did it.

Since you're being asked to install Java in order to download and watch that video, chances are it was not included by the computer manufacturer. But you could open up Control Panel and go to Programs and Features and see if Java is listed. Or you could go to your Start Menu and then All Programs and scroll through the list. I'm betting you won't see Java listed.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

Just to be safe, get the Java plugin for Google Chrome from Java. Then visit the site. Unless you trust the site completely that it will deliver a clean Java plugin.

Malware proliferators count on your hyped up desire to get something and click on any and all hyperlinks to get it. Pay attention to where the hyperlinks lead you.
