It's amazing that the old fogies can even figure out how to post!

It not the figuring that is a problem, it is the doing. Of course, for some folgies that is less of a problem for others, because they have been working with computers for decades. On the other hand, someone like me, that was entering the folgie years before even touching a computer it's a different story. However, since I never had any formal training for this, I'm satisfied with the progress that I have made.

I bought my first computer in 1995. Once I had it up and running I clicked on a mysterious program named "Word".

Then I sat and stared at the (apparently) blank screen for five minutes waiting for it to do something.

That is the same year that I bought my first computer, but since you are a college student, obviously you were decades younger than I was at the time.

LOL... PCs booted up to nothing but a blinking cursor on a black screen. It was settled long ago in court but if it wasn't for Apple, there probably wouldn't be Windows for the general public. The graphical interface was around but it was Apple that put it on a PC. Imagine doing everything you do now but from the command prompt with nothing but a keyboard. No task bar, no desktop and certainly no icons to click--Just a black screen. There was no click because there was no mouse. If you wanted music or movies, you listened to the radio or went to a theatre. (Not theater as my spell checker says.)

It was us "old fogies" that made it easy for you "kids". Pass the favor on so that those behind you won't have to go through the "drudgery" you do now.

carwiz is right, my first computer was a Commodore64, although i don't remember any of the commands i used.

I had just turned 36 when I bought it 16 years ago.

It means that 50+ can be kind of scary at times. For instance, every time I get indigestion I wonder if it's a heart attack.

No hallucinations. You probably wouldn't know about it unless you were a boater or knew one. I used to take my boat out to the islands a lot on the weekends to "relax". After the daytime tourists and fishermen left, that place used to go wild at dusk. You had go around to the North side of South Bass Island to get into the harbor. It's actually called Put-In-Bay but everyone pronounced it as Putn-Bay. The harbor was where everything happened. There would be 50-100 boats/yachts anchored and/or tied together. It turned into several large parties after dark. Swim suits optional.

They are like power supplys. Depends on what size you want, what brand and do you want modular or not.

Yeah, I sure miss boating. I'm land-locked now and about 125 miles from the coast. But, being out in the "sticks" now ain't bad either.

I have only lived a very short time near the coast, except when I lived in Houston for a few years. I made it down to Galveston a few times, but didn't really get into it that much. That probably would have been different, if I could have afforded boating, or so other form of marine amusement, but that was a rather sparse time.

If I could, the place where I really would like to live, is in the mountains, but now I'm pretty much stuck where I am.
