ESET Smart Security

I would have said that up to last week when my PC got badley infected.
While it wasn't down to anything other than me taking Eset off and forgetting to put it back on, when i did a scan of my W7 instal from XP it found a few infections. I put Avast on and it found a further 47.
so for now, at home im sticking with Avast.

seriously dude, quite warez.

ESET ftw

Nope and im not trying to hide the fact that i use Usenet either.
This was the first time ive been infected with something so bad i had to re install an OS.
No matter what or where it was, Eset didn't clean it where as Avast did.
and after some web searching ti seems like Eset isnt the best for this current destructive virus going round. I cant say one way or the other, its just what i have read on many sites.
We run Eset on all our PC's at work and my laptop but for now i dont trust it under W7 as Eset was the only issue i had, twice, when i upgraded my W7 install. Both times i lost internet and had home net work issues.

Dave.

I have a paid subscription to Bitdefender Internet Security 2009 (not officially supported in Win 7 yet). It loaded but slowed my system down. I uninstalled that and tried AVG Free. That caused downloads in my browsers (32 bit Firefox and 64 bit IE 8 to save as zero byte files. I uninstalled AVG and loaded AVAST. So far, I am really happy with it. I have Win 7 loaded on a Dell laptop too and used the Kaspersky Preview before switching to AVAST.

I prefer to roll my own security:

  • anti-virus (solo, not the security suite) -- either AVG (free) or NOD32 (pay) -- pick your favorite poison
  • firewall (again, only) -- Comodo
  • mal-ware -- a cocktail of Ad-aware (free), SpyBot S&D (free) and Windows Defender (included free w/ Win.7) -- they seem to play together well
I also have my computer(s) behind a good router with all its safety measures enabled.

Having tried and tested most AVs from nod32 right on through to avast I have come to the conclusion that Avira fee edition is perfect for the job. It is very very light on all resources, scans very quickly, does not let anything past it whether you click it or not, finds all web malware and is generally excellent at what it does. The only thing it lacks and which annoys me is the fact it will interrupt you half way through a game to update itself.

Avira free edition = Spot on:)

Actually, it's not really all that bad at all. I've been using an essentially similar cocktail with XP (32-bit, 2GB memory) for quite a few years now without any major problems -- ever since the P4C 2.8GHz. It's a breeze on my Q9650/P45 and i7-920/X58 systems.

No! No! No! I really hate to jump in with the no's, but I used it (on build 7000) and it crashed my computer constantly. It's annoying, freezes easily, and warns you about things that aren't even there. I'm sure it works great for you, Julio, but it doesn't work for me. :)

As for the things that do work (for me), I use AVG Free. It's free, stable, and it works. That's really all I can ask for.

Feel free to try anything!

you should find out what triggers that freezes, resources probably? and for things that aren't even there, I told you to befriend the settings. since we're using the same build of windows 7, I wish that what I've been experiencing with kasperskyTPW7 is no different to what you've been having.

I was a great lover of ESet security, in fact we still us eit on everything at work but it seemed to break when ever i upgraded my W7 install.
I now use Avast (thanks to this forum) and that seems to be better and handles the upgrades without issues (for me).
Went form 7077 to 7100 without even disabling it.
