Avast and GDATA had an excessive amount of false alarms- of their "high detection rate", many were false, and that affected the true percent of detected legitimate malware threats.

False Alarms
“To better evaluate the quality of the detection capabilities, the false alarm rate has to be taken into account too. A false alarm (or false positive) is when an antivirus product flags an innocent file to be infected when it is not. False alarms can sometimes cause as much troubles like a real infection.”

These are the best Labs-
of these AV-Comparatives is the most exhaustive and has the highest standards for certification. VB100 (virus bulletin) is another top notch certification body.
I dont even consider a product if it doesnt recieve certification from all FOUR of these testing bodies, and then it must consistently show a year after year pattern of the VB100 across ALL platforms, and recieve level 2 from EastCoast, and 3-star Certification from AV-Comparatives [Advanced +], and do this consistantly test after test.

Best AV Certifying Labs (in order)
AV-Comparatives
VB100
Westcoast Labs
ICSA Labs

I take my security very seriously as I run a small wireless WPA2 AES network, and hate reinstalling Windows, or wasting time recovering corrupted data files. I also like to know that I am secure from Identity theft. I research, and then I buy. I used to be a Perpetual Beta Tester for Onecare, and it always missed malware. Glad to see it getting better now with 3-star certification, but Ill stick with NOD32 4.

This is what I run:
NOD32 4 (set a SysInspector "checkpoint". (Like HJT, but more advanced diagnostic) used for Heuristic comparison of the system) Enabled self defense and password protection of settings.
Windows Defender (set to detect/notify regarding software not yet classified for risks, and changes made to the computer by software permitted to run)
Windows Firewall (outbound configured to block)
SPI hardware firewall (stateful packet inspection)
IE8 (ALL cookies blocked-manually configured to allow certain Domain cookies-thus preventing malicious cookies/tracking/Adware. Smartscreen, and In-Private filtering enabled to automatically block)

Most Antivirus programs are resource hogs. If you run two at the same time, they will fight each other for your system's resources and they most likely will fight each other's definitions.
It is best to only have one Antivirus program on your computer and periodically run online scans using another vendor.

Thats right.
The key word here is "conflicts"

and of the two, AVG is not very good.

I would run NOD32 4, and If you need to, run an online scanner/cleaner.

here is a list of the legitmate online and free scanners that I compiled:

Of course running and additional program is going to use more resources. That's a given.
As far as definitions fighting with each other, I just don't see it. Maybe both of them trying to alert you of a threat yeah.

I don't run any AV myself. I just thought "running two AV's is a bad, bad idea" ( my emphasis) was a little exaggerated.

Never, ever run more than 1 anti-virus,(nor firewall or pop-up blocker for that matter) at the same time as it is a surefire way of getting infected as two rival engines will fight each other.

Ask any of the major malware forums for an opinion and they will all tell you that.

Believe me, I've been a moderator at McAfee Security Forums for years and I've seen the result.

You can, however, run anti-virus alongside some anti-spyware applications.

In addition to my McAfee I use SpywareBlaster and one or two others.

As for not running any anti-virus at all, well, good luck with that.

Using non-RAID on purpose as I find RAID to be too temperamental.

ten, we encourage people who own computers to have a firewall, an up to date antivirus and a good antispyware program installed and functunal. You may not think *you* need one, but other people may need to be safe from you!

Your vulnerability to infections is contagious to another person's computer .... SDBots love your type of computing. :devil2:

I use the Technical Preview of Kaspersky's AntiVirus for Windows 7:
Windows 7
Before that I always used Avira Antivir and ZoneAlarm, but ZoneAlarm doesn't work on Win7...
The Technical Preview is for free so i thought why not? Kaspersky is not the worst AV/Firewall so i installed it and it is working (I hope it is ;) )
