Which antivirus is best for win7

Another 1 for Kaspersky here and with the new edition 2010 it just gets better.
Results and comments - www.matousec.com

1 tip is to buy it from somewhere like Amazon not Kaspersky direct as it's far cheaper that way. Could be the same for other antivirus products?

I would have to say...

1) Microsoft Security Essentials beta - catches more than most others, I've found.
2) AVG Free - many features, free.
3) avast! - as stated by someone else, uses only a little CPU
4) Avira - free
5) Norton - at least it works...
6) ClamWin - doesn't even remove the virus
7) Kaspersky - annoying, frequent false alarms, hard to use, messed up many of my programs

Those are my favorites, in that order.

Those are my favorites, in that order.

In order of user experience, hehehe. I bet you never paid for ESET?

As for Kaspersky, it's a good package, but only recent versions are good. Go back a year or so and it gets bad.

AVG and Avast just don't cut it for top-notch protection. Nice option for 100% free protection though.

I have to agree that MSE is a good choice, and it deserve to be up top on your list.

Avira has very good detection, but along with that, tons and tons of false positives.

As for ClamWin, why would you even bother? That stuff is garbage.

And finally, Symantec... well, bloated and annoying, we can all agree. It does its job fairly well, but overpriced, over-valued, and over-used = not best option.

MSE is free and the system seems to run faster with it running, even over ESET which is very good.

Honestly we can go around and around about which AV works best or not. I might have"A" installed, and it will not find x- virus or malware on my computer. You might have "B" installed, and it might find everything under the sun. Then I might install said "B" on my computer, and it might not find anything. Then you go ahead and install my "A", and it might find everything. What am I saying? It is almost like russian roulette, you never know which AV might work to find what virus or malware. We just have to keep trying different ones, and hope whatever we choose, is the best choice. I have run Xoftspy, and found that it works well, and then there are times, where it did not find anything. Lately I have been using a slew of things> Hitman Pro, Prevx, Malwarebyte, Avast, WOT, just to have a barage of protection. Does that mean I am 100% protected? No, but it offers a level of comfort. Some of you may have just one thing, and still be more protected than I am. Virus makers are getting more and more intelligent, and it is an on going battle between AV and Virus makers. All we can hope for is that the AV makers stay vigilant in their efforts. Virus makers will always be ahead of the AV makers. The AV makers just have to come up with a removal and prevention tool as quick as possible. Just because one AV found or prevented a virus, just means that they got the "word" about a virus or viruses, and were able to create a definition to combat it. Another AV might not have gotten the "word" as yet, so they don't have a definition to fight the latest virus as yet, they will.....eventually. Sorry for the rambling.

Anti-Virus program

I use Cyberdefender and have for some time - I'm not switching. I know it works great; it's blocked a few viruses and I feel very safe. There is a free version, but i upgrade cause I wanted the 2gb of online back up storage - good stuff!

I call it the craptop.
A few months ago, MaximumPC did its review of AV products and I think they rated Symantec the best - apparently its latest product has had a real turnaround. No bloat and very effective was their summary.

Its fun to listen to peeps blast AV products. Every product seems to have its short moment in the sun. A while ago, everyone considered Kaspersky the best. Eset has always hovered right near the top. I did get infected with it on but a full scan after booting with their rescue disk did the trick.

My SysAdmin said that Windows Defender was one of the most kickass AVs he's seen. Yank the primary HDD, slave it another computer, run Windows Defender and all malware was history.

I think it would be better if we stopped comparing paid AV products to free ones. That's probably the biggest factor in AV software selection.

On my business rig, where I paid for an AV product, I've used Kaspersky and NOD32 and they both worked great. To renew with Kaspersky, they wanted my first-born so I was able to snag NOD32 (Eset) for just ~$25 at Newegg. Even though I got infected with NOD32, I have to say that once Eset is loaded, you don't even know its there - great product!!!

In the world of free AV products, Avast rules! I always use it on my gaming rig and have never gotten infected. MaxPC had the same verdict but simply hated the interface (radio) which is a total joke. Many, many peeps use Avira. So I was thinking of putting on my 7 RC but they wanted you buy some magazines (or some bull**** like that) in order to download it - screw that nonsense.

Oh and I forgot - no computer is complete without Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Their free product (manual scanning) totally rocks!

Keep in mind, the free malwarebyte does not prevent, it only cures. Basically it does not run in the background providing real time scanning; you have launch it to scan to see if have infections. Not sure if the paid one offers prevention before cure.

I would rather get MSE than Malwarebytes. Don't get me wrong but I have a ton of legit files in my computer. They are either packed or protected and Malwarebytes detects them as virus false positives. And that is very irritating. So now, I use NIS 2010 Beta and MSE. They work together like a charm and don't seem to conflict. Go for it.
