Which antivirus is best for win7

Right now I am using and tying out avast! I was using AVG Free before but though Id give avast! a go by reading the other posts. I do like the AVG interface and not so much of the avast! but avast! has good features.

I agree. Coming from Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, at first I was hesitant to trust the Avast detection rate. After a few months, I really like it as it has saved me from viruses a couple of times.

You can go here to download Avast skins. I personally like the MacLover OS X skin.

I have been using AD-Aware Version 8 on both Vista 32 and 64. I run defender and MS firewall. AA stopped finding cookies about 4 months ago then would not download updates automatically. LavaSoft support said un-install and re-install that did not work. I Installed 8.1.1 that did not work. AA support said un-install/re-install. That did not work. Installed MSE on 32 bit version and it started finding tracking cookies and one virus. Installed Seven 32 and 64 bit and magically AA started working. I am going to keep MSE running.

I have been using AA for a long time and this is the first time it failed; what is worse is that support could not come up with answers and sort of indicated it was my fault. Waiting for the subscription to run out!

Neither Avast, Avira or AVG (or Eset for that matter) get in the top group in the latest rigorous and independent tests conducted by the German tester AV Comparatives.

MSE scores in the top group.

avcomp.jpg

Our post is HERE. The AV Comparatives report (surprisingly easy read) is HERE.

Please note this was a test for detection and removal of a selection of 10 in-the-wild and in-the-field items of Malware. None of the suits performed anywhere near perfectly but Norton, MSE and eScan were the only solutions to detect and remove all the main functionality of the 10 malware examples. Their clean-up was better than the other suits too.

A different bunch of Malware may, of course resulted in different results so nothing is final but on the free side of things its looking good for MSE, pretty good for Avira and Avast - and given that AVG failed to remove one of the items of malware at all -not so good. But as a broad generalization, despite Norton's negative comments about free solutions, they performed as well as, if not better than some of the most well known paid solutions.

For now I'm sticking with MSE.

That was an awesome report! Thank you for that.

I'll certainly be sticking with Norton Internet Security 2010 now.

If only the requirements were just that antivirus nukes all comers... however it also has to be light and fast. Include that and many behemoths fail, including Norton in my experience.

After all what's the point of an ultra secure laptop that you can't use because it's constantly being thrashed by anti virus?

Besides most rankings that I've seen place bitdefender at the top and Norton way down in like 5th or 6th. Mind you they don't tend to list freebie anti virus.

That is certainly your opinion, yes. :D I also used Eset Smart Security and I very much liked the fact that I was able to go about my business without ever having to even mind it at all. The only thing that did upset me was that I did once have an infection in my computer, quite annoying, but I ended up sorting things out after a while. I wish I had recorded the name of the virus and looked into how Eset didn't catch it but I wasn't as experienced then.
