Which antivirus is best for win7

Started using MSE as soon as it came out on an XP install. Was highly impressed with the simplicity and small footprint. Liked the way it updated in Windows Update and continued to use it with no problems in my change to 7. All reports list it as very effective. Until I get some research that says it isn't doing its job, I will continue to use it. The cost of a virus tool is not the point... does it work? I think MSE has the right idea about antivirus. Afterall, Microsoft is the reason there are so many viruses out there, they should make a free solution (said like a linux user).

Hey neoasr, how's it going? :) As a matter of fact I did "throw a virus at it!" I noticed over a 2 day period that my PC was acting very slow & sluggish & strange things were happening like windows popping up for no apparent reason, shortcuts missing, etc. Yet MSE wasn't coming up with anything when I'd perform scans. It just didn't seem right & i knew that it wasn't right. I begin to research & started reading through all types of Tech Sites, Independent Testings & forums that were based on the topic "Which AV's are top-rated for Windows 7"... Unfortunately I did not stumble upon any sites that stated that MSE was "Superior" but & I FOUND that there are lots of people out there that just don't have much faith in MSE due to very similar problems. I went ahead & installed Vipre AV onto my PC (which was rated very well by the way for Windows 7 users) & within minutes, if not seconds a Trojan virus was detected & quarantined!! "Now why didn't MSE discover this" I thought to myself. I restarted my PC after the scan & all seems to be back to normal again. So, keeping my personal experience in mind, "NO, I don't have much faith in MSE"... maybe they'll tune it up correctly with an update or 2 somewhere down the line. But until then I'll just stay away from it.

3 - scanned with eset-nothing found, scanned with malwarebyte- 9 trojan found.

4 - used avira, folder option, task manager didnt open- got infected. with many false positive

5 - used KIS , folder option, task manager didnt open, documents auto open.

6 - avg ,folder option, task manager didnt open, scaned with panda cloud- 31 malware found...

now just tell which av is perfect... v r not here to convince u... v r just suggesting dear.. vipre is gud. with many false positive and its paid..

hi guys
i am using ESET nod32 Antivirus 4.0.468.0, which is so great, i think it is the best one, it is so light and strong one, the latest version from eset is more stronger and reliable ,besides being u[dated every day and every hour it is against virus and malware and all kind of malicious programs that may come to your computer , so my recommendation to every one to use it, it is worth buying
good luck

Been using Avira AntiVir Personal for a couple of days now, had to uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 (license expired).

Lovin' every minute of it.

Everything seems much 'snappier' (I guess the 'rumors' of KIS slowing down Explorer were actually true, *inserts foot in mouth*).

For Firewall, I decided to go with PC Tools' Firewall Plus. Tied for 2nd place on Matousec.com's Proactive Security Challenge test only behind Comodo's Firewall + HIPS component perfect score. I thought it was going to be more 'nosey', but it's actually very low profile.

Pretty content with this combo.

Which antivirus is best for Win 7

I've been using Avast 4.8 for awhile with no problems. I also use Ad Aware as a backup to catch tracking cookies and adware. You don't need to spend a cent for quality antivirus. AVG (the free one) is a poor choice,as it does not offer realtime protection. I did install MSE on my two XP Pro laptops to evaluate it, but my PC is a week old, and I want to see more positive reviews before I install it on it. I know nothing about Avira, but they claim to be good, too. But I don't believe you can beat Avast.

Welcome Guys/Gals

there are about as many AV recommendations as users. If you do a search you will see this thread gets beat to death about every two weeks.

The best AV? the one that works for you and that you use.

I've been using Avast (currently Version 4.8) for two years now and it is the only antivirus software that I'm comfortable of using.

I was able to use AVG (Free), Nod32, PCCillin (Trendmicro), Antivir, and MSE, but I find Avast the best among those. No nags, detects and blocks viruses (via web shield), relatively uses minimal memory, among others. In the future I'm certain that I'll still be using this brand of AV.

It's light in performance, quick pc startup, simple, fast scanning time, low resource scanning cost (I can do everything even plays Oblivion with my PC while it is full computer scanning), top awards in detecting malwares, top awards in removing malware, top awards in performance, top awards in proactive. It handles all 59 malwares I encountered n collected since last year. Only Norton Internet Security 2010 that is closing in to ESET.

In my opinion, Avast is the #1 antivirus. Just make sure the update setting is set to "automatic". It will update nearly every day. I'm evaluating MSE on my XP laptops, not enough time has passed to use it on my new PC, but it seems to do good on my laptops. One thing that I don't like about it is that it will disable programs that it deems a risk, even if it violates any EULA agreement. I haven't had this problem yet, but the first time that I do and the risk is not credible, MSE will be trashed by me. But regardless of whatever antivirus you install, if you don't set it up properly and scan on a regular (three times per week minimum) basis, it won't do you much good. If you have one where you can schedule scans, by all means do so.

Another vote for Avast.
I used it in Vista and kept it through the upgrade.
That being said, for the sake of experiment I've used the new Microsoft AV on my eldest's Win 7 machine and it seem fine.

The mouse took most research. I hate that click on the wheel, this one has the old fashioned smooth wheel. There aren't many about.
This was a question I've been asking myself... Until I got Microsoft Security Essentials.

My very first antivirus was AVG (back in 2004). Needless to say I hated it's guts XD
I used Avast Home Edition for a very long time, about three years. Then one day I simply switched to BitDefender, and OH MY GOD did I enjoy it! It found over 550 malware files, rootkits and crap, I was surprised that WinXP even worked... Never used Avast again! After the trial period I was researching the internet for something else and gave NOD32 a try. It bugged me to no end about a certain "trojan" in operating memory, which ended up actually being a really bad rootkit.
But now that I have MSE, I am quite satisfied with it.

Although, there is one small piece of software I like to run from time to time just in case. A small program called ComboFix. It's the most powerful piece of antivirus software I ever used, and all I had to do is double-click the .exe icon :D

So no matter what antivirus you use, try out ComboFix as a manual "just in case" system scanning process. It never failed me :D
