Though both are good but I would vote for gmail because it does not have any advertisement on it's page where as hotmail has number of advertisement on the page which makes noisy
There is no comparison between HotMail and Gmail. To me Hotmail is crappy and Gmail is the best.
Three reasons why I like Gmail more are that first you can almost forget Gmail after creating an account and you don't have to reactivate the account when you visit after a long hiatus. Secondly Gmail downloads messages in a client with POP3 for free. And finally the size of their message store is unmatched.
If I think a little bit more I can find many other reasons. My first e-Mail ID was Hotmail but I abandoned it after just about a month of use over a decade back. It might have become great since then but I would not know now.

im the other way i prefer hotmail to gmail.
there is little comparison these days , i like the sweep function in hotmail, you click sweep, select an email from your inbox and you can then delete all the emails from that sender, you can also block that sender too, all in the sweep., i cleaned out over 300 emails in about two mins using it.

Both will do the job. I use both. I use the hotmail skydrive which requires hotmail account to backup docs from local drive to cloud. I use gmail for all other email. It is faster IMO. However, both have ads which are annoying but I guess small price for free email service that is not dependent on the ISP that you use.
Gmail for me. Mainly because I have an Android phone, and it's my main sign on account. I'm pretty much all Google, so it's just easier for all Google products to be bundled together. I actually have emails with MSN, Hotmail, Road Runner, and AOL. All of witch Gmail allows to be linked to it, so I only have to open one inbox to see all my emails from all my accounts.
I'd vote for Gmail for security reasons. Changing your information on Gmail(esp.passwords) is more protected. It is on a different window that requires your password separate from your already accessed account.
Whereas on hotmail, once anyone logged in, they have access to change all you information. Besides, hotmail suffered from a vulnerability in the password reset service that allowed remote hackers to reset your password...though a fix exists now.

I would vote for Gmail also, only because it is much simpler, less cluttered, and more user friendly than hotmail. I hate the hotmail site. It's such a mess, and really slow when not using IE.
When using IE it works just fine, but in both of the other browsers I use, it is really slow to "adapt" everything to fit.
I use it for skydrive ( the small bit that i've used it so far anyway) and that's about it.
No problem.
But just remember, the majority of what was said are just opinions ( except for the security ) and a lot of times, it's better for someone to try more than one before making a decision.
