Okay. I have a bad Mobo. I have 3 options for a CPU. I have a Pentium 4 3.2gh with HT. A Pentitm D 2.8gh. And am wondering if I should get a Core 2 Duo? My Mobo only supports the C2D e4300 Conroe. Which is 1.8gh. Which woukd be best for running. I play Assassins Creed Laggy on both Pentiums. Thanks.
Rangi.

Yay, this is info.
Are you saying the mobo is bad or bad as in it's so old? I'm a bit confused on that.

I'd suggest upgrading the motherboard and get a better processor. If you're low on money at the moment and just want a better processor, then go for the Core 2 Duo.

Yeah mate I just tried fixing an old one up and it really was not worth the time, hairpulling and hassle, and if the mobo only supports that 1.8 I think you are behind the eight ball..

Mate I know money is tight but any chance for an upgrade machine? Have you considered building even? Then you can pick what aprts you want. I thin there areplentyof budget options arounnd and while the economy is like it is you could pick up something for not that much.

You are in the US too where stuff is a lot cheaper than out here.

If it's not too rude a question any idea of budget?

I could be looking at around $150 for a Mobo. I'm in NZ. This is just for the moment. I will be building a machine, but I'd rather wait a few months, so I can save around 1-2grand. Then I can build a beast. But for now. Would the C2D E4300 run faster than the Pentium D 2.8 or Pentium 4 3.2? I use C4D which requires decent rendering. And need to know which'll render faster if I want to be able to save Money.
Thanks, Rangi.

Hiyya Sheesey and sorry meant to say welcome. Mate I am embarking on my next build now a - a beast as I mucked up last time and used a i5 2500 instead of a K for the sake of saving a few dollars and an H67 board instead of a P67 so research mate is the go and plenty of experienced blokes in here.

Do you get your gear local? I get mine from PCCG Melbourne although I live up country (NSW) - good prices mate and shipping is about the cheapest I have come across. I'm going Asus P8Z77-V and i5 3570K now I don't know what the shipping would be but they have this that might whet your appetite ASUS P8Z77-M PRO Motherboard [P8Z77-M-PRO] - $139.00 : PC Case Gear unless you can get it better priced where you are of course.

Oh and sorry Rev missed your post - absolutely

The Core 2 Duo will be a slight improvement, if your planning a new build I would just wait it out.
You'll be better off to save up for the new rig.

If you can't wait, then the Core 2 Duo.

Personally Sheesey I am with Dave as some of those second hand CPU's can be quite expensive mate.

I recently priced up a Pentium Q series for my tester and frankly it was more than a new Ivy Bridge i5 !

@ICit: That's a damn nice Board. I will wait tn buy a Mobo, as I will probably want a new one when I build it, and probably just sell my old Comp. I buy my stuff localy and over-priced. But mostly I just get Comps of mates and strip them of any ok parts. Thanks guys, will get the C2D. I just pray she runs a-okay in my horrible Mobo. :)

That a niuisance you live so far off Sheesey I have a house full of bit s you could pick over. Oh and that board mate thats new the one I referenced from PCCG.

I'll have a scavenge around as I think I have a core duo somewhere - what is the board mate as I might have something else that might be compatible you can have for nothing as I do have about twenty Pentiums lying around - a lot of 775 sockets LGA and otherwise ones and most are 2.8Ghz and above .

Hey I just had a thought too it might be cheaper for me to buy something here and ship it. I did my brother in the UK a machine up just last week and shipped it and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.:)

I sold it a while ago. It had a Celeron D I believe. I threw in a new power supply and graphics card, then put it on Craigslist.

Wow, that would be great! I will have to save, and could use you as a middleman, for cheap prices. I'll grab you a link to my exact Mobo. Thanks again dude, will sort out some way of paying shipping fees.

Motherboard Specifications, 945GCT-HM (Livermore) - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
Not a prob mate I'll have a look you might have to give me a couple of days though as I work shifts at the local hospital and have to fit in when I can.

Shipping mate don't worry about that will only be as much as thick letter I'd imagine. Meanwhile I have got to sort that socket out.
