Which Defrag programs?

Evening all just a quick one, I have been reading a lot about defragging HD's and it seems that not many people seem to use the defrag program that comes with windows is it really that bad? I have been loking at defraggler & mydefrag i think they were called just wanted your opinions on these and which one is more user friendly?

I'm using Puran at the moment

Everyone has their own favorites. At the moment I'm using Puran Defrag

It's free for personal use. It has optimizations similar to some in the MyDefrag scripts. Also has many scheduling options, and an idle automatic mode so that you can defrag while downloading or something along those lines.

Win7's defragger doesn't have a visual representation after analysis. It only gives a number...I use Defraggler...The XP Defragger was actually better than win7's.
...Although on my server downstairs I use JKdefrag (ran by cmd)

In other words I like the pretty colours.

But overall it doesn't matter which one you pick, just some organise data differently. Aka the 'optimisation' way.

this topic always gets people to arguing which one is best :devil: i have tried auslogics free one , O&O and diskeeper in the last year or so. i like diskeeper the best of them 3 and am using it now.

After testing a few couple of years ago, I came to the conclusion that PerfectDisk was best (for me).

Another vote for Perfect Disk.

Of all i have tried, i found this one the best choice for my needs.

Although you do need to buy this one.


Many of the programs that are recommended not only defragment, but do file placement as well.

Windows defrag just defragments and stops there. This is why many prefer a program other than Windows built in one.



For Example, With Perfect Disk:
Consolodate (This is the most common method defragmenters use) which defragments, then moves all the files together, to the outside (fastest) part of the disc. so theres no free space. it also helps reduce seek times slightly as all the files are closer together, rather than in different areas of the drive.

Smart palcement : which defrags and the paces the file on outside (fastest part of dics) except instead of just putting them togetgher, it orders them from least modifies to most often modified to resuce future defragmentation.
<<Some programs do this as well, but call it a Modified defragment>>

Defrag only; Defragments Files Leaving them as is.

Many of these programs work very similar. Some have the exact same methods, some more (such as Arrange by folder name/file name)

Have you tried it with the '-b' switch? No, I'm not pulling your leg. Even though

defrag /?

in a command prompt says nothing about -b, on some installs it still
optimizes the boot files. Don't ask me which versions or why. You just
have to try it and see. Of course it only works on the boot partition as in:
defrag C: -b

if, it works on your system at all that is.

Another perfect reason to use disk defrag in windows 7!!! thanks for that tip!!! I never knew that was a parameter!! Ima see if that helps with the booting!!

How come everyone wants to use a defragger? If your on 7 or Vista it does it automatic unless you switch it off. What's the point when what you gain is millisecs. I don't get it?
Or, is it that you gain 5 seconds of your life each session on a computer?

Fragmentation prevention FTW!
Yeah, this is the only defragger that prevents most fragmentation before it occurs.

@mitchell I'm guessing it should require an administrative command prompt. The window should have Administrator: current directory

in the caption bar. Usually if you get it from Start Menu Accessories it wil be an admin command prompt.

The trouble with just leaving the defrag set up as in Task Scheduler is, I don't think the "idle detection" is sophisticated enough. When I first got a PC with Vista preinstalled, pre SP, the defragger was in the Task Scheduler and nobody told me about it. I was in the middle of a defrag with JkDefrag when, guess what? The Vista defrag.exe kicked in!!! Since I wasn't pounding on the keyboard it figured the machine was "idle" even though the disk activity was through the roof.

If you are going to use the built in defrag during idle you probably need some more sophisticated idle detection that takes disk activity into account. Running it manually is fine.

Nice! I'm definitely going to try that out. One question though. After it says "File fragments larger than 64 MB are not included in the fragmentation statistics," what are you supposed to do? Will it automatically start optimizing the boot partition or do you have to type in something first?
