which IRC client do you use?

Ive been using mirc for many years and have recently been trying other clients out. So far Ive not really found one that I like and is as functional as mirc.

So which client do you use? Would be nice to have a 64-bit version but the only ones Ive found so far arent really up to scratch.

The only one I've found that even comes close is xchat (xchat.org), and it isn't as good as mIRC in my opinion. I think the functionality mIRC offers far surpasses any other client I've used.

You may also want to to look at pidgin and trillian for their IRC capabilities as they aren't bad and also give the familiar IM look and feel to IRCing.

I agree there. Xchat is ok, but you cant surpass mirc for its shear amount of features and scripting.

I like to see what the alternatives are like.

Its been years since I last used ICQ. I use MSN now.

Yeah and I refused to use MSN because Microsoft used to force it on us
I quite like ICQ..............when the ads are blocked!!

They no longer force it on us now since you have to go out and download it either just by itself or as part of the live pack. You can block the ads in msn also

mirc... but sometimes install different scripts. nowadays i just keep the bland mirc and customize it myself, runs cleaner/smoother.

Have used the plugin on trillian, was ok, but thats been a great while ago.

The plugin for Pidgin is pretty up to par. Obviously there is little or no scripting support which is truly where mIRC shines. I'm ashamed to admit that I use wine to run mIRC on Linux because it's just that good (most *NIX IRC users would shun me for that).

I would stay stick with mIRC. It works, it works well, and if you click the nose of the guy on the registration reminder it squeaks at you!

I was only talking from my point of view, it wasn't meant to relate with everyone else.

If I find a good program I'll stay with it ie I use Firefox because it was always better than IE, and I am unlikely to change no matter how good IE becomes (provided that Firefox doesn't go down hill.) The same applies to MSN only MSN never had a chance because it was forced on me, I pushed it away without even looking at it. So now no matter how good MSN becomes, I will stay with ICQ, and as I first said everyone I know uses ICQ

I've used mIRC from 10 years ago. Not so much any irc now, but I have just installed mIRC on my Windows 7 RC1 7100 yesterday. Works fine.

I used to use an overlay called Invision from memory - it was great - had good colours and could easily hide all stream of so-and-so joins and so-and-so leaves - in busy channels it was helpful.

Wonder if invision or something similar or better is still around...

I used to use this sometimes as well. Until they stopped updating and supporting new builds of mirc and filling their bug holes lately.

All of the above things like on join and part/quits can all be customized in regular mirc. Even the same default invision colors.... just wont have a few addons included with that script, which wasnt alot or useful unless you modded chan or had a fserve. IMO
