Which is better Computer Hardware engineer or software engineer?

I am nearing the time at which I would like to pick what career I would like to follow. I have narrowed it down to the two options above and I cannot decide between the two of them. Please help me?!

I think you'll do well financially in either field, but my feeling is that you might have more options available to you as a software engineer. If you're the type that likes playing with equipment a lot then hardware might be a better choice. I personally feel that there might be a little more creativity involved on the software side of things.

I've worked as a programmer (at NASA) and a hardware tech and as a "tech support" for a special purpose computer. The right field, a programmer will make much more than a hardware tech. Hardware engineers, again depending on the specific field and expertise, probably won't make what a high end programmer makes. On the other hand, a lot of coding is done by "off shore" contracts or by people that have come to the US just for the programming jobs.
