I am not a gamer.

For image editing, which is the more reliable graphics card, DDR3 or GDDR5 ?

I have a GDDR5 in one machine that is not reliable at all and has been nothing but a nightmare. (invidia/EVGA)

Thank you.

Hi,
EVGA sells a lot of gpu's mind if you narrow it down just a tad by posting which one you're referring too :)
Yes ddr5
Difference is memory speed
Most issues are likely driver related not ddr but someone would have to be silly to buy an old ddr3 gpu and expect any type of performance out of it :)

DDR5 is much faster at sending memory while being a bit more power hungry.

Thanks everyone.
Someone asked which card I currently have; it is EVGA nvidia GT 730 2GB GDDR5, which has been nothing but a nightmare in all aspects and is highly unreliable; I wish I had paid more heed to all the 1-star reviews before I wasted my money, as the problem I have is so prevalent that the manufacturer has an automatic response to any negative review.
Now, when I look at a computer product, the first thing I check is the 1-star reviews.
Randomly and at the most aggravating times, my screen will go black for several seconds, crash whatever program, and give a notice saying nvidia etc. etc. has stopped responding and has now recovered; this often happens when I click the "save" button in any image editing program; it also occurs sometimes when I click from one open tab to another or just go to the next web-page.
Please don't suggest any fixes or solutions as, believe me, there are none that I haven't tried and we would only be wasting our time; I have tried so many different drivers that it makes my head swim to think about it.
From what I read, those with DDR3 seem to be happier and sleep better at night; but I wanted to have all the information before I spent more money.
Thanks everyone for explaining the differences.

Hi,
I wouldn't doubt it a 2gb card would be better if it had an additional power connection on it otherwise it gets all power directly from the motherboard
Open the case and see what wattage your power supply is
There should be a tag on it with all the information on it.

It says at least a 300w power supply you never want to be at the minimal requirements
300 Watt or greater power supply with a minimum of 20 Amp on the +12 volt rail.****
EVGA - Product Specs - EVGA GeForce GT 730 (Low Profile)

Hi,
Did i link to the correct card meaning yours does have the fan to cool it ?
There were 2 others without fans is why I ask.

Not sure how to see if the second part about the 20amp on the 12v rail ?
Are you monitoring your temperatures ?
This works for amd or intel systems
Core Temp

I personally like this for intel

The card has a fan. It is not a low profile card.
I just saw the link and that is for a DDR3 card; mine is GDDR5
No, I am not monitoring temperatures; I don't figure temperatures should even be a factor with anything I am doing.
I edit a photo and when it looks to suit me I save it; if it overheats doing that, then something bad is wrong.
I can wake this machine up from a two hour sleep and the screen go black when I open a tab.
I might go through five days of editing photos and it not miss a beat, then black-out five times the next day.
I never had a single problem with the integrated graphics during normal use and the only reason I got the card is that a few of the programs just do not work with integrated graphics.
The only plus about the card is that I can at least use those programs that before I could not.

Hi,
Okay
Well did you buy it new or used and from where ?
You can always try another brand but as I said I would go for a 1gb card not 2gb
I ran a asus gt640 ddr5 for about a year or so
It worked okay for photoshop/ cc6 and a few other photo editing programs.

Card was bought new on Amazon; sold by EVGA and handled via Amazon; support was a joke; it was just a delaying action to make the 30-day grace period pass; after that, trying to submit a ticket always sent me to an EVGA "sorry this is not available at this time" page; talking to a real person on the phone was no better.
It must be nice to have so many customers that you can treat them like dogs and still have a never ending stream waiting to throw their money at you.

Why 1GB instead of 2GB ?

Thanks.

GT 710 up to GT 740 are unreliably useless on systems like Haswell to Skylake because the onboard GPU of those are on par if not powerful.

Hi,
1gb might need less power for real time usage opposed to a 2bg card
Like I said I had a gt640 asus and saw no real issues using cc6 3d rendering engine which 1gb was the minimum requirement
I was using a 220w acer factory power supply at the time too.

None the less I doubt ddr3/ ddr5 has anything to do with the issue
You just got a defective card = it happens
asus support is no better might actually be worse fwiw
