which movie file format is best ?

hello i have converted all my movies to wmv format and they are about 1.2 gb in size and i play them through alshow,can anyone suggest a better format for size and the best video quality,also which converter program to use as i am using winavi but it only does wmv,rm or avi ?

What format are the videos in to start with and where did they come from, your camcorder, downloaded or what? There is an excellent video converter called Super and it's free.

Xvid is nice , but a bit backdated. The newest and most popular is Matroska (.mkv).
But the h264 codec is really superb !

Generally I use HandBrake to convert my dvds to Xvid or mkv to store in hard drive, and to include in media center library. HandBrake is a pretty cool program to convert formats.
