I have a friend who is considering purchasing 3 different models of netbook. The first is 279 runs xp has a 160gb hard drive and an intel atom n450 processor. The second computer is the same is the first but runs windows 7, and is 329. the third is 369 and is the same is the second but has a 250 gb harddrive.

The intended user has never owned a computer before will be learning on it, and intends to use it as a word processor, to surf the internet, and watch movies hooked up through a tv.

My question is should he consider getting windows 7? and which computer do you think is the best for a long term purchase?

thanks so much for any replies.

Get Windows 7. If the second and third choices are similar, he should get the 2nd, and just get an external drive later if he needs more space.

The person may benefit more going with a regular laptop vs a netbook.

Link us to the netbooks they are looking at.

I recommend the Dell vostro v13, with an external DVD/RW drive. I have had 6-8 laptops in the past 10-15 years, and this is the best one yet as far a value, size, power, etc. Just check it out very closely before buying a netbook. I have had this one for about three months now, with Windows 7 Home Premium, and have nothing negative to say about it at all.

You'll mostly have the Windows 7 Starter Edition on netbooks...Since the upgrade to Home Premium is not so expensive by now, maybe it could be a good choice to head on 7!

Take notice of some sub-notebooks as a 13,3" screen to be more confortable.

Did some service work for Dell years back... My .02 cents... Stay away from Dell!!!

polarbear, I forgot to mention in my initial post that 100% of my 6-8 laptops in those 10-15 years have been dells. No problems here to speak of with Dell in all those years. I guess I have been lucky huh?

I would get the one for 329. I would not run XP as support for it is going away, and the extra price of the 250 gig isnt worth it. Would be better off getting more ram if possible

Now in regards to upgrading to windows 7 starter personally I would go with xp because it might be faster. But is it likely a better choice to get the 7 starter since it will become more functional in the next few years, and xp will become outdated?
XP is dead, period. Don't get it.

What is the difference between 7 starter and 7 home?
The difference between the 2 is mostly that Starter lacks some Aero effects.
Here is a link with a more detailed list: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_skus_compare.asp
He can also use the Upgrade feature to get Home Premium for about $80 if he decides to do so (at any time).

Windows 7 Ultimate is faster than XP Home on my Dell Mini 9.
OSX Snow Leopard is faster than Windows 7 Ultimate on my Dell Mini 9, just installed OSX a few weeks ago and am impressed.
