Hi everyone,
Since I really don't know where to put my question, im putting it here because it's about the software for Windows 7.

Okay here's the question, and sorry it will be a bitt long. And may even be a stupid one according to some here.

A half year ago I bought a new PC (at this time don't ask me for specs, the PC isn't here at this moment) It was instaled with Windows Vista. It worked but it turned out that Vista has a major problem with an ISDN connection. And because that's all I have for the internet, I had it changed back to Windows XP Pro.
PC worked, untill some kind of hardwareproblem made it crash. Send the PC back to firm I bought it, and they fixed it. But as they didn't have an XP version in my language they put on the Windows 7 version (this one they had in my language).

It worked for about 2 days, then it crashed and crashed and crashed:cry:
Blue screen after blue screen. And not wanting to reboot. Reboot said header was corrupt. Because im really an computer nittwitt, I have brought it to a store to fix. They will check the hardware, software and so on.
But the storemanager told me the crashes could be because I instaled drivers that where for the older systems (XP and Vista, printersdrivers). And my virusscanner would trigger the crashes because of those old programms. (virusscanner is AVG by the way).

Okay when you haven't given up reading :D here is the question, as I brought my PC to the store, I also bought an new laptop. Also working on Windows 7. And because I don't want this one to crash aswell, im now insure that software I can/can not/schould not install on my new laptop.

Is it true that the older software is bad for the Windows 7 system??
Can I install some small games (older ones that run under XP and Vista)??? My hubby loves his Majongg game:o And would like to have it on the new laptop, but im not sure and to chicken to install it just like that.
So please help me, ive searched this forum but can't really find the anwser to my question. What can you install without problems on windows 7??

Hi clipsje, and welcome to sevenforums :)
It's not strictly true that older software is bad for Windows 7. Some older software may not run on W7 if it's 64 bit, but may run in W7 32 bit. You may need to install and run the software with the appropriate compatibility mode selected.
What software to use? Well, that totally depends on what you/your hubby wants to use it for ;)
Before you start installing though, I'd strongly recommend that you create your recovery discs (if needed, ask your retailer or manufacturer) AND/OR, also create a backup, perhaps on an external drive/usb stick.
This thread: FREE Great Programs for Windows 7 is a great place to start, as all of the software has been tried and tested by SF members.
You should start with a decent antivirus and antimalware, then maybe office or an office alternative, media players, browsers, mail programs etc. One of the great things about a new computer is the option to try out new programs that will enable you to perform all the tasks that you need or want.
Have fun!

Since you have a fresh install, all the drivers are correct. So, you can install any program you want, and you wont have the same kind of crashes. Like the guy above said, a 32/bit OS will support more software. Just try the software out!
