I didnt like Windows 8 when it was in pre release, I think its pretty awesome now and you can run it in desktop mode no problem, the metro interface takes a little time to get used to and is ok to use when i flip to my big screen TV.
8 is just getting better and well worth a upgrade.

Win95 and Win98SE were fun to learn on, Vista is a PITA, 7 needs a lot of third party apps to work right, 8 is junk. But none are as fun or easy to use or reliable as XP.
