I use Downloader Pro (from Breeze Systems - Digital Camera Workflow Software: Browser, Downloader, Canon Remote Capture ) for downloading all my images, it even worked on the RC, they also have a tool for browsing called BreezeBrowser, I'm told (by my dad) that this also works in 7 x64, their site says all their SW is Win 7 x86 and x64 compatible. BreezeBrowser may also download from the camera, and it DOES support Canon RAW (my dad has a Canon DSLR he shoots RAW with).

If one of your problems is that you can't install the Canon WIA driver in Win 7 to download pics from your camera, there is a work-around. In your camera's settings menu there should be an item labeled "Communication". Change the setting from "Normal" to "PTP" and Windows 7 will detect the camera and allow you to transfer files between the camera and your pc without using any Canon software or drivers.

This is what I had to do to get my old G3 to work with Win 7.

We have just upgraded our GX280 to Windows 7, added bigger hard drive as well and when my husband tried to put his Canon EOS300d camera software onto computer it would'nt automatically detect his camera because of driver. I found your infor and showed him, he changed settings on his camera and now he can download pics to the pc. Great thanks for publishing the info.

I have Zoombrowser EX 6.1.0.20 running fine on W7 64 bit. Came on Canon Solution disk ver 33.0 2 years ago. Runs fine as it did under XP and use it all the time including for downloads. Good viewer, but use Photoshop Elements 8 (PSE8) as it's external editor. However, I seem to recall some people having problems with later versions of Zoombrowser under Windows 7!

Canon support may be questionable but my experience with their "stuff" is good including their software. If you want bugs try PSE8.
If you want other (free) software MS live photo gallery is quite good.

I have two Canon digital cameras, an S2 IS I normally download to a Win ME system, and an EOS 10D that I normally download to a Win XP system. I see that I cannot use the Canon WIA driver on Win 7, but that I can use the Win 7 native driver. I do have to change the EOS 10D setting of communication=ptp. However, on Win 7 the native driver does not preserve the date (2010-09-09) subdirectories getting the dates from the camera like it does with the WIA driver on both Win XP and Win ME. Instead, it just uses the current date at the time of the download. Has anyone solved this issue?

Hi there
I'd use ANYTHING other than ZOOMBROWSER -- using a proprietary Database to store your pics in is NEVER a good idea - zoombrowser often got corrupted etc.

I use Photoshop now but there are loads of bits of software that can process CANON formats -- adobe photoshop ELEMENTS is good if you don't need the full blown Photoshop. Has a decent browser too.

Your camera should appear as a USB device to W7 but if it doesn't you don't need to throw it away -- just get a Card reader and copy the pics to the PC via the Card reader.

Canon DPP is another good program for dealing with Canon Camera RAW formats. For JPG's any old program will do.

I have an EOS 400D and can select ZoomBrowser 6.5.1 which is designed for Win 7. My Partner has an Ixus 100IS and can also select the same version.

I find ZoomBrowser is an ok browser that I still use for browsing - came with my Canon P&S. Minimum editing is quite good although I never use it.
I use Nikon ViewNx 2 with my D90 and again is a good browser. The editor is rubbish.
Used Photoshop Elements 8 since it came out. Editor is stripped down photoshop and great. The camera raw processor (ACR) is good and supports a wide range of camera RAW formats. The data base manager/browser ("Organiser") is Adobe proprietary and bug ridden. I don't trust it, and don't use it.

I'm still looking for a reliable photo database manager that I can trust. I just use a folder system at the moment.

I have a Powershot SD450. Just got a new desktop with Windows 7. It doesn't recognize the camera until I check for new devices. It finds the camera and says there is no driver. But this camera uses PTP and should not need drivers. The camera can upload on any XP system without additional software. I tried installing the original Cannon pre 7 software, no luck. Went to Cannon, no drivers developed. Went to Microsoft, says this camera is compatible, but it doesn't seem to be. Any advice?

What manufacturers SHOULD do and what they ACTUALLY DO do is quite different unfortunately.

I like Canon cameras - especially the Professional grade DSLR's but have often thought their whole I.T dept should be replaced when it comes to writing decent application software -- most of the programs supplied with their cameras are quite frankly DREADFUL although the latest version of DPP is quite good.

I use Photoshop CS4 (upgrading to CS5 soon) for processing RAW files and save these on to dedicated USB disks.

I Link the pics to a home grown MySQL database -- the reason for this is I can add decent descriptive data to the pics, keep the EXIF information (For non shooters this is "Metadata" embedded in a RAW file which gives you details of date, time, Lens used, exposure, camera used andf loads of decent goodies) and have the MySQL DB spanning several disks.

The problem with things like ZOOMBROWSER is that the data is proprietary, hard to mend if it gets broken and CAN'T SPAN DISKS.

It's OK if you only want to store fairly low rez jpgs but decent RAW pics and quality A3 (or larger) print versions with loads of layers takes OODLES of storage space.


One of the things I do with the camera is remote tethered shooting (You use the computer to compose and view the frame and shoot -- often done with Professional grade cameras in a studio etc).

Most of the software for this STILL only works with XP -- but after the shoot I just copy the files to W7 and use CS4 64 bit photoshop to process the files.

I still find having an XP Virtual machine is the best solution to most of these driver problems.

Most consumer grade cameras should be seen as external USB devices but if not a card reader is cheap enough these days to just copy your data to the computer.

I have a Canon 7D and a Canon PowerShot S100 and both of them are not recognized by "Windows 7 Ultimate N x64". There is no configuration to change the PTP mode in both 7D and S100. I just can't get it to work! :-(

Can someone help me out please?
