Why 32bit?

Isn't it funny how every1 want's to jump on the x64 bandwagon, then shoot down any1 still using x86?? I'm using a 32 bit laptop with only 768MB of memory (will eventually upgrade to 2GB) and it runs W7 flawlessly, where Vista was so sluggish. Even a lot of new laptops still have 32 bit hardware.

Don't be so x86ist as it works perfectly well for those who use it.

I agree that 64 bit IS the way forward but sometimes it just takes a bit of time (and money LOL)....

My opinion is this:

Microsoft wants kill Windows XP, but the most part of computers with XP only supports 32 bits. My computer dosn't suporte x64, but run W7 x86 perfectly.

And not everybody has money to buy a pc good enouth to use a 64 bits version. A good Core2Duo in Brazil costs more than R$350, and now with the dollar expansive, the things gets more expansive.

Windows 7 should be the last x86 version of Windows, when Microsoft makes Windows "8", the most part of PCs will support x64, but now the 32bits is essential to the system sucess.

I agree that 64 bit IS the way forward but sometimes it just takes a bit of time (and money LOL)....

What new laptop is x86? I can't think of a single one. 95+% of new laptops are Cpre 2 Duo's.

I must have had my head in the clouds LOL, point taken. I'm still gonna stick with x86 as the driver signing for ALL drivers will just wind me up LOL. Although software/hardware developers will eventually sort this out.

What you have there corei7 965 (yes I checked) is nothing but a 32 bit processor with 64 bit extensions (x86-64) So maybe that's why! If you're so pro , Yes there will be and there is true 64 bit version of Windows 7: Windows Server 2008 R2 Itanium. That's 64 bit. Good luck

edit: and x86 OS-es can use more than 4G ram too.

Server operating systems are not designed for the same kind of usage as client operating systems and don't belong being compared to them that way.

Windows 8 is going to be x64 only, as windows 7 should have been (AND WAS PLANNED TO BE), they just didn't have the balls to do it.

I know, but he didn't mention that. MS may didn't have the balls, but I think they did it right and with that it is 32 and 64 bit too they made a really good OS. It supports forward and backwards a lot, and I think it's very important. Or maybe just a nice gesture

My brand new Lenovo S10 has a hardware limitation of 2GB ram (which ive upped it to already) and I dont plan on replacing it at the beginning of next year - or for lots of years, either. I finally got this when replacing my toshiba libretto 70CT. Many people are on hardware rotations of 2-4+ years, and even less for their notebooks. I've been heavily considering setting up win7 32 bit onto my S10, to replace the xp pro ive got on it now, and I tried win7 7000 on my old main system which had only 1.5GB ram before my recent upgrade. It doesn't really run all that bad compared to XP on 1.5GB or 2GB ram.

Nah 2 GB is honestly still plenty of RAM. My laptop has 2 GB RAM and runs windows 7 flawlessly and can also play games from a few years ago at beautiful framerates. Not as sure about new games simply because I haven't bought any recently, but it plays Oblivion at 60-80 fps when the video card is overclocked. In fact I'd say 4 GB of RAM is overkill still for most people.

So do you think 2gig is enough to run 64-bit windows 7? I mean, will there be any disadvantages in doing so?

Not any disadvantage, but you wont see the full capabilities of running x64 with out the extra RAM and it may be slightly slower with only 2Gigs then it would be if you had X86

No, you will see BETTER performance using 32bit OS on a 2GB of ram system. So its not that you are missing out by sticking with x86, you are BENEFITING.

Trust me though, there will be no x86 crap for Windows 8, so by then all of this will be hog-wash. Of course the rumors are that Windows 9 won't be just x64 ... because x128 will poke its head out then *sigh*, here we go again.

Well, I tend to agree with you, but in other topic I was advised to try 64-bit, but so far it seems a little too slow for me... Why is there so much contradictorial information on the subject?

I tendo to use it as a work tool, being a lawyer I think pretty much browsing net and using word does the trick. But I like rock solid systems and ocasional gaming is a plus too...

Anything straightforward would be an extreme oversimplification to the point of being wrong - therein lies the issue and the reason there is so much misunderstanding about the issues with 32 vs 64.
