sometimes, without doing anything special, the portable drive (which is very new, bought less than a month) gets 'freezed' up, what i mean is, can't access any files, becoming windows crash, waiting forever or reboot the windows. But after some reboot, the portable drive becomes OK again. I d like to know if it would cause any problems to the integrity of the stored files on that portable drive?

No, the drive should spin down on its own when not in use. Unchecking the box keeps Windows from turning off the USB ports when not in use. The option applies to all ports on that Hub. This may not be the fix for your problem but it's one cause for external drives disabling until a restart. If the drive is not in use, you can also just unplug it. Just make sure you don't have buffering turned on for the drive or you could loose data. I would also turn off indexing for it if it's for temporary storage or backup.

Your external will wind down itself after not being used to prevent ware and tear, so it will be very slow when first used after a while until it initiates.

Well if you are not going to run those scans you can try looking at the drivers for the USB ports at least and even the software that came with it.

Seems to me the drive may be the problem itself so a test with this may be on order.
