Why Amd?

Was looking at pcworld.co.uk, gaming pc's (Don't get me started 599!? without a monitor -.-) Anyhow, i might get this , if i don't have enough time to build my computer:

Seriously, the price is steep, not keen to pay, but if its good?

Not going to game much on that 3200 video card. You will end up switching out that video card to play any serious games...and you are going to have to check the specs on the power supply as you might have to change that out too, in order to handle a more high powered video card.

I was checking on a German gamers forum. They said that it plays Crysis und COD4 well but not any of the more recent games.

Are you sure about Crysis? That game stresses out about any box...even modern games are less intensive.

Checked Dell.co.uk, what a load of rubbish, you can't even pick a graphics card never mind change the processor, all the computers i see, you get rubbish performance and a rubbish CPU, c'ept they expect me to pay £800...

Unfortunately most pre-built machines, regardless of company, will tend to cost a lot more than a self built machine.

If you really want the cheapest, most customisable machine - self built is the way to go.

If you do opt for a pre-built however, aim for one that has a better processor than video card, as video cards can be more easily updated.

The only caveat there is that a lot of the pre-bult machines have generic PSU's that potentially can affect video card upgrade options.

I too am a supporter of building your own machine.

My main reason is:

Typically, most pre-built machines use the cheapest parts they can get, from whatever company offers them the lowest price in bulk.

Mostly PSU, RAM, and even the MOBO occsionally.

Although the CPU and GPUs may decent, the core backbone of the system may not be.
Sometimes, the info on exactly what hardware is used takes a bit of digging around, and many times different from build to build.

Building your own, you can have complete control of the quality of parts used.


Thats not saying all pre-builts are bad, or all do this. But many do.
There are some good pre-builts out there. (Some just as good as a custom build)

For the most part all you need is a small Philips and flat head screwdriver, the rest is pretty much "snap and click".

You have a sense of pride building your own, have greater confidence in modifying your system, etc. Just make sure all parts are compatible. Check tigerdirect for ideas...

^^ My mom also thought I would waste my 600 dollars. But nope, built a rock solid home server for the entire family to use, it streams blu-ray discs and everything! Has huge HDD space, and everything. Just go for it man! Not only did building my own computer/server get me more involved with computers, but you feel great when you build it. As someone above said, you feel allot of pride in the system knowing that you built it your-self!

The good news is that things usually only fit in one place and they only fit in one direction....so you cannot really get it backwards and blow it up.

The only place that isn't true is on the case lights and switches...but if they are backwards then the lights are backwards or the switches work the opposite to the way they should work. In other words, it will make the machine a bit goofy...but won't blow up.

hehe, she believes i cant do it, just because her 'boyfriends' son did a course on it, (12weeks) and he got the computer, to be totally honest, i can probably build the thing in 2hours. I'll see how it goes, and the good thing is i guess, something breaks... you send one part back not the entire computer (she doesn't seem to acknowledge the existence that parts have warranty), I'll see... XD
