Why does my computer fan run almost constantly?

My desktop computer fan runs incessantly. Even when it is in a cool environment, it runs almost constantly. Even when it is not supposed to be doing anything, it will be running. This drives me nuts; what can I do about it?

Also, as an aside, I have noticed that, when I access the Internet or something else on my *other* computer, a laptop, or even iPhone, on the same router network, the fan starts running on the desktop computer. Why would this happen?

I would be concerned if they didn't run constantly, unless the computer is sleeping or turned off. Even at an idle, there is plenty of heat that needs to be moved. As for the othr items turning on the desktop fans, I'm not sure what you are describing, unless the desktop is sleeping, and you have those items set as network devices, and the desktop is set to wake on LAN.

If your heatsink is full of dirt, the CPU is running hot so the fan will run at full speed all the time to try and cool the chip.

It's unclear what fan you are talking about---CPU fan?? Case fan??? Video card fan???

Fans in PCs usually are designed to run all the time. In some cases, they are designed to run faster if heat is building up internally.

I'm guessing you are complaining due to noise. Case fans can be easily replaced with lower noise units. If you are referring to the CPU fan, you can also easily replace the entire heatsink/fan assembly with a quieter unit. But any replacement is also probably going to run constantly, so get used to it. However, some of the replacement fans are VERY quiet and nearly inaudible inside a typical case.

Hi Guys! Thanks to you guys that responded!

I think that it is the case fan that I am referring to; and yes it is because of the noise [that it is annoying]. So, I am going to take the case apart and clean it just to make sure that it does not run faster or more than it has to. Also, it will not be as annoying now that I know that it is normal behavior.

As for the other devices causing the fan to run, yes I do have my computer (a desktop) set to wake on LAN. I thought that this would only wake it up (or run the fan) on the desktop when I was accessing files on it. Is it normal to wake up or run when I am just accessing the Internet through the wireless router?

The fans in my system never stop running. It's by design.
Which is why they started making Silent Case Fans.
Get silent fans and replace the ones you have.

They are whisper quite, the loudest thing on my system is the Mechanical HDD's.
The CPU fan can be heard, but it is very quiet.

The only fans that I know of that might stop running when not needed,, are Video Card fans
And Fans on a laptop.
