Why does my GPU freeze when running games at ultra high settings?

Got a new GPU and PSU.

GPU freezes, with buzzing sound and my monitor goes blank when attempting to start a game at high/ultra settings? Same for my other games too.

CPU: Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9400 at 2.66 GHz
GPU: GTX 770 2GB DirectCU II
Memory RAM: 6GB
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
PSU: Corsair CX750M

Draptak mate what are the temps for the GPU and CPU - I do notice too the CPU is a pre i series Intel - I have a Q9650 in my tester and knowing what mine is like maybe you are pushing this one a tad too hard.

Can you also list the system specs in more detail please as the system specs at the bottom is obviously a laptop and not the machine you are having problems with.

Your CPU is going to bottleneck the GPU somewhat, but not terribly. Try lowering your settings and see if that helps. Depending on what game you are playing, it could be the game itself, or it could be you are asking more of the CPU/GPU than they can handle.

Plus I would really like to see some moredetailed specs too and maybe run this to tot up what power is required eXtreme Power Supply Calculator the Asus site states 300watts for that card and the PSU would look to be plenty but we don't know what else is being run off of it.

It's not a laptop I'm using, just the PC machine

I ran the Speccy software and I got the temps:-
GPU at 46°
CPU at 42°

I'm not using any overclocking

Do you think my Q9400 is a the main cause for my GPU freezing ?

No mate I kind of knew it wasn't the laptop and the temps look ok to me - it does depend to some extent on the ambient temp of where you are of course.

I think essenbe would be better off to answer the bottlenecking of the CPU although I will say looking at the specs for that processor it does have quad core and the L2 cache is ample. But it does not have turbo technology which I think may restrict the running speed to the stock number (2.66Ghz).

The GPU has what is called a boost clock and again essenbe will be better off telling you if that would be a problem.

Just as matter of interest what board is in that machine? as my tester has DDR2 RAM and the CPU was released the same year as the one you have. I am certainly not denying you have DDR3 but would just like to download the specs for it (the board).

I now just recently put back in my old GTX 260, and attempted to play a game at ULTRA settings, it works without crashing, and I also used a stability software check to test my GPU/PSU it runs no problem unlike my new GTX 770.

You might be right there, my CPU might not handle the GTX 770.

I'm using a ASUSTeK P5QL/EPU motherboard
My memory type is a DDR2 RAM

Your CPU will run it just fine. It is only that you may not get quite the performance you would with a newer CPU. But, your CPU will run that card just fine. All of the new Nvidia cards have a boost clock If you are not overclocking it, it is not a problem. download the latest Nvidia WHQL driver from Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers , Set Windows update to download but let me decide what to install, uninstall your current drivers and shut down the computer instead of restart that it will ask, remove the current card and replace it with the 770, restart the computer and install the drivers you downloaded using this method, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/327414-nvidia-drivers-avoid-problems.html . Install the Asus utility or MSI Afterburner set an aggressive custom fan profile for the card so that the card does not get hot. See if that is any better. Let us know the results.

As essenbe says mate and I notice that the board supports 1066Mhz RAM and I also see that you have just 3GB installed I don't know if essenbe would agree but it is quite a small amount to be running. It can support up to 16GB and if it were me I would get up to 4GB at very least and if you can afford it 8GB would be more than enough.

John, on a 32 bit system, the most it can use is 4 GB (3.5-3.7 technically) so, I would make sure I had 4 GB installed. If you switch to a 64 bit X64 OS, then more ram is much better.

we may also need to run HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < correct bit version for more detailed stuff.

Already have the latest Drivers installed and they're all up to date. Before that I already did a clean installation of windows, and installed it again with the new GTX 770. The GPU also freezes if I try to run the 'System Rating' from the 'All Control Panel items'.
However I used the Asus tweak utility to turn the fan up but unfortunately I'm still getting the same problem.

We really can't help you unless your hardware specs are up to date. That CPU will run that Graphics card. The problem is not the CPU, it is either drivers, board, PSU or the card itself.
