It is impossible to work on my laptop. I have and ASUS i3 machine with 2 GB RAM. The HD LED is almost always on, and doing every little task can take a long time. Any ideas what I can do to improve response time?

You can start making your performance improve by following this: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html
Also, by following the tutorial, you HDD will surely be less active than it was before.
You don't have to do all the steps, but I would certainly do these steps: 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 15, 19, 20, 26, 28, 31, 33 and 35.

But if you want maximum performance, you might consider doing http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html courtesy of Gregrocker

Running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter on a virtual machine to run Metro Apps.
Look for Indexing options (Start button, write it in the search box), and try to turn that off.

Was discarded by previous owner due to "horrible performance".
Was running Win Xp from a IDE drive. Yeah. Was a pain.
SATA II drive and Win7 and it zips away! Yay!
