When I plug my Logitech MX518 mouse into the rear of my MSI Z77A-G45 moboard it (the mouse) either stops working or becomes very erratic to the point of freezing the computer.
Plugged into the front of the board it works flawlessly.

I had wireless keyboard/mouse (K+M) USB device plugged into back of my tower, with a mains powered external HD next to the KM device.

Both external HD and mouse played up in a variety of ways. The biggest pain was the mouse which was erratic

I now have the K+M wireless device in the front of the tower and the HD and K+M are perfect.

Hope this helps :)

I guess that means yet another new mobo. The current one isn't even a year old. :(

I would buy a USB card and see it that solves your problem. It is a lot cheaper than a new MB.

I second that.

Something like this would be great, nice and cheap and not to mention USB 3.0 is great for future proofing.

Also please make sure you have the necessary drivers for your motherboard, the USB headers on the motherboard may use different controllers to the ports on the back (some are plug n play, some need installation via drivers). Here's a link to the official drivers.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention, the BIOS may not be configured correctly.... try disabling/enabling legacy support. If you find after changing an option you can't get back in, just clear the CMOS (at least that's how I think it's done on Intel motherboards). And if you're willing to take a risk you can also try updating the BIOS to the latest stable version. These often fix bugs and incompatibility. Download options here.

A bit OT, but nice choice of mouse :p Most people go for the high dpi = better and go for laser mice.... I have the slightly newer model of the MX518 (a G400) and it's a very good mouse! The Logitech gaming software can help you configure the mouse a little better, such as changing default DPI and changing the polling rate :) Here's a link if you're interested:

Well, I went onto the MSI website and updated all my drivers from there. The mouse is still plugged into the front panel and so far, 'knock on wood' everything is working okay. There is a new USB card coming anyway.

I have erratic operation with a wireless Logitech mouse. It is plugged into the designated USB 2.0 port. I have another, a Microsoft wireless mouse that came with a wireless Microsoft keyboard and it works much better. However, I like the Logitech as it has some extra buttons, such as one for "back", etc, that the Microsoft does not have. I've tried other ports, both USB 2.0 and 3.0 and the Logitech works about the same in all. I originally had a wired mouse and it worked OK, but it was cheap and died.
