I have recently acquired a NC6320 Compaq laptop, but when I put in a SD card nothing happens, nothing shows up in My Computer, is something missing from this list a possible cause of the problem?

New or used? There are several yellow flags in your Device Manager, I have weak eyes, I will await others who can see what is going on much better than I. Unknown Device can mean Windows cannot identify something installed or attached. And, you have a Security flag - I have no idea what that would be.

It's a used laptop, was originally on Windows XP and has been upgraded to Windows 7 so I assume these missing items haven't been installed.

If you are using a relatively large capacity SD card, the card reader probably can't handle it. If it is an XP era laptop, it probably can only handle an SD card with 2GB or less capacity.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
The card I inserted was an 8GB card so could be too much for it, I didn't realise there would be a limit.
Is there anything from my screenshot that would suggest a problem or is it just due to the fact the Sd card is too large?

It could be that the issue with the "Mass Storage Controller" is the root of the issue, check if you can, that the reader will manage a 2 or 4GB card - if it will not then it's possibly a driver issue for the controller though it could be a failed hardware component. you can right click the faulted item and try install driver [select that Windows searches itself for a suitable driver online].

The easiest fix is likely to be replacing the card reader - there are lots of USB adaptors at low prices - you can also try to find an adaptor that reads larger and /or different types of card for future proofing - I carry several USB sticks everywhere I go [2 x 128GB and 1 x 256 GB ] so an reader update would likely be a little future proofing

RolandJS clicking on the image produces an expanded view that's much easier to read ;)

I'll have access to the laptop within the next few days so I'll have a look at it then.
If I'm unsuccessful with lower capacity cards or if I can't install the drivers I'll buy a replacement card reader, I see online there are some USB ones for less than £10, would they be alright to use on this laptop?

The laptop will likely only have USB 2 ports so a reader will be limited somewhat by that, but should be capable of reading cards up to 32 GB, so should meet your needs. Best to read the specs of the adaptor as to limits to card capacity before you buy

I'll be sure to check before I buy, but first I'll have a go at sorting the existing card reader. I'll update this thread with my progress.

I tried the lower capacity card, still nothing, so I try to update the Mass Storage Controller, it says it cannot find a driver through Windows Update, so I open Windows Update and updates are turned off, so I turn on Updates and click search for new updates and I get the error below. Anyone know why this is happening?

This error is usually caused by a firewall or other security option blocking windows access to the update server at Microsoft [normally a third party anti malware suite or firewall as Microsoft options would default to opening this port]

Currently the laptop hasn't got any anti virus installed, am still getting things set up, but I'll look at the above link just to double check incase something that was installed is blocking it, or if a security option of some kind is interfering. As I'm looking at this laptop on behalf of someone else I will next have access to it in a few days to explore further.

I've looked at the link mentioned above but unfortunately hasn't solved the problem. Is there a way to see if there is something like a security option that's blocking windows access to the update?

Would appreciate any help/advice.

I have recently acquired a NC6320 Compaq laptop, but when I put in a SD card nothing happens, nothing shows up in My Computer, is something missing from this list a possible cause of the problem?

you seem to have missing drivers for other devices on your laptop - let's take care of these problems before the SD card problem

Install the Authentec Fingerprint driver from this package.

try installing the Texas Instruments Media Card Driver (Vista 32bit, may also work on 32bit Win7) from here. run that package and reboot to see if the built in card reader device will work properly with either a 1Gb or 2Gb SD card inserted with the TI Media Card driver installed.

btw, an 8Gb SD card is a "high capacity" card (aka. SDHC)
HC = high capacity

also desktop & laptop computers built from 2006 & earlier that have internal card reader devices cannot handle and won't recognize 4Gb, 8Gb & higher SD cards [hence Windows Explorer will hang when attempting to read these kinds of cards]. you will need to buy an external USB reader device and connect that to an available USB port to access "high capacity" (HC) cards from 4Gb & greater

I've recently got a external SD cars reader so that has solved that part of the problem, it's not the end of the world if I cannot use the internal one.
I'll use the above post though to install the other missing drivers. The only issue now that I can't seem to solve is getting Windows Update to work. Should I start a new thread in the relevant section for this?

yes. Post a new topic about the problem with Windows Update in this section of the forum.

btw, here's the link to the NC6320 laptop driver downloads page from the HP support site (choose Windows Vista 32bit as the OS on there from the "Choose different OS" link to show & download all the drivers)

also, this is the external usb card reader that I use on some of my older PCs that have internal card readers that won't recognize my 8gb & 16gb SDHC cards {it's a Digipower 42-in-1 usb card reader that looks like a usb flash drive - very affordable, the Digipower external usb card reader can access my 8gb/16gb SD cards without problem :-) }

OK great thanks, I'll mark this thread as solved as the SD reader side of things I've got sorted out. Thanks to all those that have offered help and advice. All the above links should help me get all the other drivers sorted out too.
