hi everyone im setting up my small home network, i have windows 7 on my desktop and vista on my laptop, i can access files via both so im happy i have set it up ok the main problem is when im using my laptop and go into network then click on my desktop i can access the "user" folder which contains Liam & Public. I dont want to share the folder "Liam" only the Public folder but im having great problems trying not to share the "Liam" folder. I go to C:\users\liam right click the folder then sharing and then advanced sharing which is unticked, but I am still able to access this folder through my laptop any ideas why?

Craney Hi and welcome

Is Liam on laptop or desktop? In liams properties is sharing checked anywhere?

Hi mate im using the same username on my laptop and my desktop so i have liam-laptop and liam-desktop, i have gone to the C:\users\liam right clicked the folder then the share tab and then advanced sharing, the thing is the advanced sharing tab is unticked, when you go back to the sharing tab where it says network file & folder sharing it says Liam shared and the network path is showing liam-desktop\users\liam, so when i go to network on my laptop and go onto liam-desktop the user folder is there with the 2 folders "Liam" and "Public" i would post a screenie but not to sure how lol

I should note that the folder "Liam" does have a padlock symbol next to it

Try this experiment: create a new user (standard user, not an admin) on one of the laptops, log in with the new user, and see if you can still access the "liam" user files. I'll bet you can't.

The reason you can see the "liam" user files is because you are logged in with the same username on a different computer. Windows will not attempt to prevent "liam" from accessing "liam", as long as the passwords are the same.

cheers mate i will give it a go, i did try loggin into my desktop via my partners laptop where i do not have an account and the workgroup is different to, i had to enter a username and password to access the users folder on the network and once i entered the password i could access both the "liam" folder and the "public" folder, seems very strange to me

you need uncheck sharing sub-folders first, then main folder on sub-menu press share with... "nobody"
then you can share any folder only

I'm guessing you are using "Home Group" for your network.... If so change over to Work group and set it up XP style... that should fix the problem.

Tater is correct, this problem only occurs if you are using Homegroups in a mixed Op system network. You need to change over to Workgroups in order to fix the problem as Homegroups is not made to work with a mixed Op system network.
