Why have system restore on secondary drive?

Hi,

fiddling with restore & noticed, on my backup HD or D drive, that for some unknown reason I had a restore usage setting of 23% & current usage of 80GB - even tho the System Protection is set to Off :huh:
I do not remember doing this (would never set it to 23%). Couple years ago I moved the OS to a SSD & kept the original HD for backup purposes. Of course formatted the old HD to remove any instance of the old OS.

1) If System Protection is turned Off for the backup drive why would Restore be using any space?

2) Would restore have been automatically enabled on the secondary HD for any reason? I do use Windows Backup & place the backups on the secondary HD. Does Windows Backup require System Restore?

The System Protection settings can be a little confusing.

If you store windows system images on that drive, the size you set in System Protection for that drive will control how many system images you can have before they're deleted. Even if it's set to Off it still controls the size.

System Protection also controls the size of shadow copy (restore previous versions) size. The larger you set it, the more previous versions of files you can have.

"Restore system settings and previous versions of files" should only be selected on the OS drive.

If, like me, you have separated your Data from the OS drive then you only need to have "Restore previous versions of files only" set on your Data partition.

Well I am confused Guess I'll have to dedicate some time to Windows Backup this weekend. Try to figure this out.

I have docs & music, some small MP4 files on primary drive. Movies are on backup drive along with backups. & System Protection is turned off.

Since I have reduced the Disk Space usage for drive D (backup) wonder if that will affect my Windows backups? Right now the Backup size is 50 GB & will grow to 80 eventually which may be why the Disk Space usage was set so high.

Will post back with results.
