Why is my USB drive name is always in CAPS?

Why would Windows insist on all capitals for USB disk names? If I rename it changes to capital casing. In explorer and in a command window:

C:\>label f: usbdisk

it becomes "USBDISK" in explorer. What gives?

Well that's odd. I have a few USB Flash drives and they allow lower case drive names. Just for curiosity's sake how is the drive formatted?

That was what I was thinking. NTFS formatting will let you use lower case drive names. So what you could do is take all of the stuff off your flash drive. Reformat it using NTFS and then put everything back on, and you should be good.

you don't actually need to reformat, nor do you need fancy software to convert to ntfs.

Expanding on what mickey megabyte said, just run the following command in Command Prompt:

CONVERT f: /FS:NTFS
LABEL f: usbdisk
