Why is the xp volume defaulting to a E drive?

Hello,

I have a problem.

I am attempting to dual boot a Dell vostro 1500 laptop w/ 500 gig hd.
I am doing a fresh install of windows 7, and then shrinking the volume to create a new partition. when I do the xp install, why is the xp volume defaulting to a E drive? It has the system reserved as the C: and my 7 installation as the D: drive, this is what Im seeing in My Computer on XP.

That is the drive letter which is available. If you want it to take the C letter, then remove it from the System Reserved partition (as it shouldn't have one) in Win7 Disk Management then reinstall XP after full format of partition.

After install EasyBCD 2.0 should autoconfigure the Dual Boot - if not then give SysReserved another letter.

Hello teximex, welcome to Seven Forums!





If there is nothing on the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) you don't want to lose, you could use the info in the tutorial at the link below to completely wipe the HDD and start over, that way you could configure the partitions as you wish and do away with the "system reserved" partition and you could install XP as in Method One in the tutorial Greg listed above, then Windows 7 and W_7 will automatically configure the boot files at install to include XP.

Barefoot has the better idea which is to install them in the correct order to begin with, with Win7 last so it will correctly configure the dual boot.
