Why So Many Problems With Windows 7?

This is an opinion thread, starting with my opinion.

The idea that Windows 7 is a problematic, terrible new Operating System is a false perception.

If one would read through many of the thread titles, and some of the posts of unhappy people, one might conclude just that: Windows 7 is full of problems.

Windows Seven Forums is a place for people to come when they experience a problem, much like sick people go to a doctor's office or clinic. People who are not sick do not go to to the doctor! Would anyone suggest that everyone is sick because some people seek a doctor's care?

Actually, there are threads here where happy Windows 7 users take time to tell their happy experiences (like well people telling the doctor how good they feel). I happen to be one of those happy Windows 7 users. No mater how many happy Windows 7 users there are out there, most of them will not feel the need to contribute to a forum in the way that users with problems will. So the perception is skewed.

Please consider another analogy. How much does a person need to know about the operation and inner workings of a vehicle before owning or operating said vehicle. Isn't it true if one knows how to insert fuel, turn the key, move the "Drive" selector, use the accelerator and break pedals, and turn the steering wheel they can operate the vehicle. Would anyone suggest such a person is capable of diagnosing a car that will not start? Have you ever heard a person complain about a car that always seems to be breaking down? Would you conclude by their complaint that all cars of that make and model are defective?

The skills needed to use a computer are pushing the 'power on' button and typing on a keyboard. Using specific software takes a great deal more knowledge. However, would anyone suggest such a person is capable of diagnosing a computer that will not start? Is it wise for such a person to attempt to change the Operating System of their computer? Would you conclude by their complaint that all Windows 7 OSs are problematic?

It is the course of wisdom for vehicle owners to learn all they can about the safe operation of their vehicle. The same can be said of computer owners. However challenging, it can be fun and rewarding to learn the inner workings and gain the ability to maintain and repair one's own computer. The volunteers at Windows Seven Forums encourage such hands on education through a library of tutorials and by assisting others in acquiring the skills in researching solutions. Success or failure is up to the computer owner.

It is my hope that this thread will bring some balance to the negative words of angry frustrated computer users.

Happy surfing!

I couldn't agree more Robert

I had that experience today. I had a meeting and it was taking a while for my laptop to boot. I blamed it on XP...

The lady on the other side of the table said she heard about Windows 7, "but apparently it has some problems, doesn't it". Well, she has never even seen Windows 7, let alone tried it. I quickly educated her that the operating system is great and most if not all the people experiencing problems have their hardware or themselves to blame.

Unfortunately people have a pre-conceived notion that new OSs are problematic. Maybe Vista launch (and all the "folklore" later associated to it) is to blame for that. Maybe some people just need something to nag about...

XP in it's day had it's own fair share of issues when it was initially released.

I know, I had to downgrade enough XP machines to more reliable proven operating systems at the time.

With the second release of XP (SP1 :p) it did become more reliable and with SP2 and SP3 even better.

XP was in use for so long in OS terms that many people just do not Know anything different. A lot of IT people do not have any experience with anything other than XP.

Vista was a success with 85%+ of people that installed it but the other 15% were a lot more vocal, especially those who wanted you to read their newspaper or Blog :sarc:

Couldn't agree with you more! I've been through the many years of transition from Windows 3.0 to what we're banging on today. Every step of the way has been a learning experience and been quite rewarding once you "LEARNED" the ins and outs of the new OS. Although sometimes plagued with frustration and impatience, you figure out that every step forward has brought incredible improvements and benefits that you didn't think were even possible not so long ago.

For the last 19 yrs. these experiences have provided me the opportunity to make my living banging on Windows. :) I don't consider myself a MS fanboy but I am very grateful that MS exist and has continue to develop and improve their product.

As I have posted many times before, hats off to the admins, the mods, and all the members that continue to so willingly share their knowledge and experiences in an effort to help others eliminate the frustrations and sometimes heartache of learning the new product.

With that said, Win7 is certainly a product that far exceeds my expectation and I look forward to sharing it with friends, family, clients, and all that have an interest...

Thanks for starting this thread!

Best Regards;

Ken

No problems with Win7

Living in the IT world and repairing computers for so long, My brother and I see now problems with Win7.

We have found that most problems have been User, software, or hardware and not the OS. But, everyone's wants to blame the OS first and I personally think Win7 is great.

This is my two cents, but it's only from my experience.

I tend to look at it as a problem with human engineering. While I like W7 very much, I am having some growing pains with it, because some of the differences and features have a learning curve involved. For those who were/are Vista users the curve is not so steep, but for those like myself who passed on Vista and stuck with XP, the curve is greater.

In a perfect cyber world the hardware and software would be designed in a fashion that the operator would only need to know how to insert the key, press the gas pedal and steer, the computer would be smart enough to compensate for who ever is behind the wheel. Unfortunately, this is not the nature of this world...cyber or not. In the real world many tradgedies could be avoided, if those who designed and produced the machines that we use, took into account the knowledge, physiology and nature of people, a great many sad days could be avoided and life be made much easier.

Windows 7 has not arrived at that point yet, and I doubt that any future versions will ever either. Until that day does arrive, forums such as this will remain, and the help sought can be provided much better if those who council keep in mind the reality of the patients who visit them. It is good to support improvements like W7, but it is not nirvana.

We are not idolizing Microsoft. We are saying we have a good product in our hands and that people should know it before coming to a conclusion. Jumping to them is where the risk is.

Nice post! Thoughtful. I've had a very good experience with W7 so far. I'm loving 64bit. The tools that MS provided allowed me to move settings and files for a 3 user system from 32 bit XP Pro to Utimate 64bit with very little trouble. The whole clean install method was well thought out in my opinion. When MS does something right, I have no problem letting them know. Same applies when they mess up. I wish more of *my* customers would do the same. That's how we improve ourselves. Through *honest* feedback.

RedBirdDad;

Please allow me to welcome you also to Windows Seven Forums, and to thank you for making your first post on this thread! Nice Red Bird avatar. Also, your signature is a concept I am very familiar with as a retired diesel technician / mechanic. I would constantly remind the shop foreman that if you don't have time to do it right the first time, you will always find time to do it right the second time. What a waste.

Cheers!

This says it all and equally applies here...

One thing that has to be taken into account here is that if 98 of 100 people have absolutely no issue with a game, or any other application, it is only the 2 people with a problem that will post a request for a solution on the forum.

So the suggestion is that 100% of people have issues where in fact it is 2%, and these issues may not be related to the OS in the first place ;)

All the credit for the professionalness of the site and how it is run goes to the site owner, z3r010 (John). The volunteer moderators are awesome as well. Then there is a huge body of experienced computer users from all over the world, all walks of life, and all ages selflessly willing to share their time and knowledge. I am not aware of any support group that offers solutions so quickly to so many. A Forum to be proud of.

Window 7 Libraries

I have read numerous posts from those who say they just "hate" the Windows 7 Library arrangement. While I grant them their right to their opinion, without ridicule, I find myself relying more and more on the positive features of the Library. I am one who fought with the "My Documents" folder ... seemingly forever. It was always more nuisanse than useful me. I could never find what I wanted there because my actual documents were scattered all over the hard drive.

For example, I can store pictures anywhere I want, second internal partition or drive, external drive, or network drive. To view my pictures I only need click "Pictures" on the desktop menu and I can access all of them in one place. If I need to save a backup copy of something to another device, I do not have to sort through my devices and then scroll down through the file system to find the folder I want to save in. I just click the Library and copy and paste the item into the backup folder there. Everything in one place.

Windows 7 has helped me organize my stuff better than ever. I know I could have created the folders, created the shortcuts, and organized them all in the "My Documents" folder ... but I never did. Now, the Library does almost all of the organizing for me. It is true I cannot move folders and files around on the desktop like I used to, but I never did that much anyway. The convenience of being organized is of much greater value than the loss of a so little used feature.

Cheers!
