Why do spell checkers suck?

Why do so many forums and or application forms have spell checkers that don't recognize the correct spelling of many words? It really grinds my gears. For example the word "pedophilic". According to various dictionary sites that is a correct spelling. Is it adjectives that these spell checkers miss. What's weird is this site as I was typing it had the red squiggly underline as I spelled "pedophilic", but then went away. I was using this word to describe a female commander shepard on a mass effect face site. It looked really young. But anyway there have been other words I can't remember that I've seen this. It's really annoying cause then you're thinking wait did I spell that wrong?

Spell checkers arent perfect unfortunately.... Of course this is why they have the "Add Word" button. End of the day, you shouldn't be relying solely on a spellchecker anyway because of course you can spell words incorrectly but if they are actual words then it won't flag them.

Example:
Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.
As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.
Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

That way I know my replies or post are clear and concise! IMO

I just deal with it and let it go.

Perhaps taking some grammar classes at a local college will help? One of my pet peeves is those that use "your" instead of "you're", it is extremely annoying. I see it on Facebook all the time.

2 Funny, and what a great example. I sea yours is working up to par as well, ...wouldn't change a thing about it. lol

People from Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain spell a lot of words differently to the USA and can cause confusion as to what spell checker to use.

Actually Kodi has a point, Most "built in" spell checkers are useless for the UK english speakers. Most programs just have an "American English" Spellchecker, not a "Proper English" spellchecker. I swear to god I want to shoot WLM every time it tells me I've spelt "colour" wrong, and insists that it should be "color"

Dictionaries and spell checkers are even now appearing for "Mobile phone Texte-ese". What chance for real lovers of proper language skills and decent communication when even people sitting next to each other in a bar are texting away.

I reckon in 10 years time verbal communication will probably be dead and all communication will be done by mobile phone.

The ear as a human organ will shrink to the size of just allowing one of those "white bud earphones" you see all over the place -- another indication that the younger generation will do ANYTHING to avoid actually speaking directly to another human being.

I often see family groups in a restaurant not actually talking to each other but all of them texting away on their wretched mobile phones ---- surely a restaurant is one place these devices should be SWITCHED OFF in.

Howver if you are an engineer the old magic formula f = 2 pi omega l*c where f is approx 2.2 Ghz, l = inductance and c the capacitance will block out most mobile phone signals for around 50 metres if you can make your white noise generator push out about 1 mw at 2.2 or 2.4 GHZ .

Typical mobile phone signals are in Microwatts so a 1 mw signal will drown out any mobile phone signal in the area you are using your white noise generator from.

Often I take the Eurostar on a Friday from Paris to London and after a busy week the last thing I'm sure most passengers need are overstressed Americans yabbering business all the way from Paris to London at the top of thir voices with TOTAL disregard for the other passengers of their carriage.

I'm not anti the use modern communication devices but these should be used properly respecting the other PAYING PASSENGERS rights to peace and quiet.

If I have to use mine I go and use it in the corridor or in the bar car -- not screeching at the table where my fellow passengers would have to put up with it.


Perhaps respect for other people is lacking these days -- not deliberately I'm sure -- but "The Ipod generation" seems to have cut itself of from the rest of the planet totally immersing themselves into their music and ignoring everything around them - even spreading to a lot of workplaces too now unfortunately.
