Why Upgrade to Windows 10?

Thinking about it I have several spare SSD's and to avoid losing anything I might just reinstall the same OEM onto the cleaned up spare drive then whip the 10 onto it. If I don't really like it then it will not have cost me anything eh? Because I am curious as to why it is apparently so good when as before 7 was the be all and end all.:p

Simple. :) Do as stated in Download Windows 10 Insider Preview ISO - Microsoft Windows .... if you like it, keep it there. It will be automatically upgraded to RTM when the time will come. If you dont like, format the SSD. No cost involved there. :)

So we can get a free copy without updating our Win7's? :) I guess it would be the Home version when time comes?
Will the current Win7 installs be able to co-exist (dual boot?) with W10 if we take the offer? Does it make the W7 product keys invalid after upgrade? Questions questions ...

GokAy
Here is what I am interpreting from tweet that thrashzone posted.

If you have preview build install and upgrade to RTM you won't need the windows 7 keys, but I think you have to keep testing the builds. I am not sure if testers will be able to turn off the monitoring of their computers with the RTM upgrade. Yet to be determined.

If you upgrade from windows 7 to rtm you will need your key and in some cases you may need to call Microsoft to activate. Mine is an oemslp key, so I would have to use the key on the back of the computer to upgrade. I might need to call Microsoft and explain the different installs I did when digital rivers was available and that my motherboard was replaced under warranty.

One thing you might keep in mind is some of us joined the insiders program in 10/1/14
All my installs have never covered a 7 install although twice I installed as a dual boot which was a mistake imho,
Every iso released after was on it's own hdd or ssd and never was connected while another os was connected,
My old mother board only has 1 sata port anyway so I got a dual ssd hot swap evo case to switch out os's installed on separate drives.

The longer you wait the less likely it will be an option but you never know but hurts nothing to try a oem of win 10 pro is valued by M$ as 199.99us
If the tweet is correct it is a savings of that much just for installing 10tp in it's own environment.

Ok I have got that now so I really only have time to try until the RTM comes out and after that time I have to keep the 10 and plug on with it.
Actually Arc I think my plan of using another drive might be the way to go it's going to cost me nothing as well.

I suppose like a lot of folks it is change that we do not particularly like and the 7 is simple you have to admit. What put me off track in the first place was 8 and frankly I thought it was awful and the only saving grace was the Classic Shell or Stardock that made it uncomplicated for me at least - I just did not like those panels and apps etc - ok for androids but my larger machines - no way. Plus as for the touch screen stuff on large machines well I find them grubby on my Samsung phone and tablet and that is quite enough for me. ;)

I've had no problem with a Dual Boot. I rarely go back to Windows 7 so eventually just delete it, but there isn't a reason I've seen not to shrink 7 to Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview.

In fact that's exactly what I'd do if necessary to be sure I get the TP upgraded to free RTM rather than involve the Windows 7 license.

We don't know yet how the 7 key will be affected, but if it's like the upgrade from XP>Vista>7>8 then the qualifying key was never deactivated or even required - the installer only needed to see any OS on the drive to allow Upgrade version. All of it was done on the honor system.

But let's say that the 10 RTM licenses the BIOS, or worst case records and then suspends the 7 key. This may affect how the TP needs to be installed (e.g. on a separate hard drive) to avoid affecting your Windows 7 key.

I'm eligable for the free update to Windows 10 and am unsure as to whether to go for it or not. My Windows 7 installation works flawlessly and I'm happy with it. Are there any reasons to/or not to upgrade? I can't see many benefits. I tried Windows 8/.1 for a while and hated it. The start screen and charm bar etc was pointless on the desktop.
I always say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. 7 in my opinion is Microsoft's last good OS. It's also the last one that we can really say is "Windows-y" with the Start Menu and My Documents and whatnot. I don't know much else about it, but my advice is always to play it safe and stay away from these "cloud"-type OSes. This one just happens to use Telemetry (Customer Experience spyware) by default, which your 7 system gets "prepped" for with an update, KB2952664. Looks like 10 is nothing more than an NSA honeypot.

If you want to get rid of the update program, delete the folder C:\Windows\System32\GWX, which stands for Get Windows 10, the "X" being the Roman Numeral for 10 (as usual, guess who else used that naming convention), and uninstall the Windows Update KB3035583 (uninstall KB2952664 and delete all tasks in Task Scheduler under Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience and Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program if you want to get rid of Telemetry -- which, if you're at all concerned about your privacy, you should). If either of these come up again in Update, hide 'em for good.

Otherwise, they'll keep coming back like a couple of bad cold sores you can't get rid of. :p

Yep that is my thinking exactly :)
A unaffected win-7 install if I choose to upgrade or not to upgrade and from what I've read win-10 Home version is very limited in control compared to the pro version that wasn't know until just recently
For once a old mother board might be a positive.
But ultimately it was just easier for me to use and get rid of win-10tp build by build during all of these months since 10-2014

gregrocker,
Are you saying if you dual or triple boot with windows 10 it could effect the the windows 7 key even it is installed on another partition? Please, let me know if that going to happen even if you have to email or PM me. I have an Windows oem slp key, I wonder how that will work with that scenario.

I would like to keep my current set up but instead have the insider rtm on partition 2.

My current setup

let's say that the 10 RTM licenses the BIOS, or worst case records and then suspends the 7 key. This may affect how the TP needs to be installed (e.g. on a separate hard drive) to avoid affecting your Windows 7 key.

gregrocker,
Are you saying if you dual or triple boot with windows 10 it could effect the the windows 7 key even it is installed on another partition? Please, let me know if that going to happen even if you have to email or PM me. I have an Windows oem slp key, I wonder how that will work with that scenario.

I would like to keep my current set up but instead have the insider rtm on partition 2.

My current setup
Windows 7 Primary Partition 1
Windows 10 Primary Partition 2
Xubuntu 15.04 extended/logical Partition 5
Linux swap extended/logical Partition 6

This setup was a little difficult but I was able to do it on one hard drive.

This info came off a wiki about dual booting,
I want to dual boot instead of replace my current version of Windows.
If you need to install Windows 10 on a separate hard disk or partition, you will need to purchase a full license.

Retail pricing information:
Edition Pricing
Windows 10 Home US $119
Windows 10 Pro US $199
Windows 10 Pro Pack US $99

There's no reason not to do the dual boot now to get a feel for it.

There will be plenty of time after Windows 10 release once we find out the mechanics of activation to decide Which free upgrade offer you want to take advantage and how it is best installed.

You may be able to upgrade Windows 7 and the TP each on the same hard drive, or you may need to re-image TP to a separate hard drive to upgrade it. A lot will depend on whether activation is machine–specific or install–specific.

Currently Windows products are machine specific for OEM and install specific for retail Windows. This means you must keep OEM on the same hardware but can move retail anywhere. But even with OEM you can Dual Boot retail on the same drive, or PC.

Windows 10 may be a whole new game, and one with free admission only in the first inning. Gabe's reveal about free TP Upgrades sounded tenuous enough that I don't think this is all decided Yet.

Yep which made this tweet very interesting to me seeing as 10tp has no clue which version of windows is installed on this machine because there's no version 10tp can see on another connected drive or partition,
So like most people testing it has win-10 pro t.p. and it should go to win-10 pro in rtm

Gabreil Aui said you wouldn't need the Windows 7 key to upgrade Windows 10 preview to RTM.

Then we have this, which I have seen as well

I want to dual boot instead of replace my current version of Windows.
If you need to install Windows 10 on a separate hard disk or partition, you will need to purchase a full license.
This gets really confusing. I assume that quoted statement is directed at the consumer not an insider but I guess time will tell.

Then gregrocker brings up another concern if windows 7 key could be effected if you have windows 10 installed on another partition on the same drive like my setup.

Well carwizz mate I am with you as I have just spent most of the day pulling out the 8 install (run in 7 style) drive in my Sandy Bridge - cleaning and flipping in a spare SSD and installing a stripped down 7 of the original OEM.
Onto this I am going to put the 10 freebie and try it but as I said like you I am concerned it will just be another rehash of the 8 and if I read you right it does sound convoluted in getting to the stuff we can access so easily now in 7.
I know they are spruiking it is more secure and other stuff like that but show me a secure PC anyway. I watched a doco on the Stuxnet crap this evening and that some security suites may not be accepted and if Kaspersky is one of them then I just will not email especially on my Sandy.
Luckily for me I have three desktops and three laptops to fall back on and if like my brother do not like it then it is just a matter of flipping the 8 back in or wiping the lot and installing 7 - joy of joys because my old OEM was one that came without SP1:cry:

Anyway I suppose we shouldn't just dismiss it without trying eh?
