I just noticed that this forum is powered by vBulletin 3.8.5. A simple right click then view source revealed this to me. What is so special about vBulletin that a webmaster would want to pay so much for it? Seems a bit of a waste when there are some really good free ones out there like MyBB and PHPBB.

Flexiblility, scalability, familiarity. It costs under $500. Plus there is a new comer Xen.

A very valid question :)

As a previous user of PHPbb, MyBB, vBulletin and soon to be XenForo I found that there were a lot more controls with vBulletin, allowing for greater management of you forum. The other plus side is the subscription gives you access to professional addons and support as opposed to a user driven forum with ideas & tweaks ;)

Saying that, there's absolutely nothing wrong with PHPbb or MyBB and it's all down to the users personal preference.

Ken is right XenForo is the way forward...:D

You get what you pay for and vb3.x is the best forum software currently available.

Xenforo once matured a little will be the future.
