here are some possible solutions to end of desktop etc....
use windows 7 disconnected from the internet for programs like database, art and photography, design etc.
this way one would not need updates, which are mostly for security issues anyway.
use the windows 8 follow up for internet only activities and retrieving data needed to transfer back to windows 7 programs
btw not interested in practically anything that is called an "app", on my tablets, being put on my desk computer.
I just have afew programs that will not work with linux that I use all the time like corel draw for graphic design, and perhaps a few others that are not compatible with linux (not sure which ones really) or the linux equivalent is just not as good.
