Solved Wi-Fi setup for a Canon MG3222

We recently purchased a Canon MG3222 that is wi-fi capable, but I use a USB cable for connectivity so I didn't bother with the wi-fi connection. The printer is working okay, and now I want to setup the wi-fi so my wife can use the printer from her Samsung Galaxy 3 and possibly her Nook Color.

Our machine (see system specs) does not have any wi-fi connection and is CAT5 connected to our Verizon Fios Actiontec MI424WR Rev1 wi-fi router and it has a WPS button. Both the Galaxy and Nook have wi-fi access to the internet through the Actiontec router.

My problem is getting the printer and router to see each other. I follow the instructions in the setup sheet that came with the printer.

• Printer is on.
• Press and hold the Maintenance button until I see the "1" change to a flashing dash line.
• Touch the Fit to Page button and the dash line changes to three ascending dashes.
• Press and hold the WPS button, the dash lines continue to ascend, but after 45seconds I get an error, "E, 2, 1".

I have tried more than a dozen times clearing the error by pressing the "Black or Color" buttons with the same resulting error. Would anyone know what is wrong here?

The manual just says if the network device is already on, turn it off and turn it back on

All that came in the box was a setup guide


and turning off the access point was one of the last things I tried after I made my original post - see red outline on attachment - , I even tried the stop/reset button, and repositioning the router that was adjusted back up to 100% transmit power. I can have the wi-fi power as low as 55% and my wife has no problems with the Galaxy or Nook.

I'm going to have a look into the firewall/wi-fi settings on the Actiontec. Here's my Network Map from Belarc, I wasn't sure, but I blurred out the Android Device details.

I've been looking all over for a detailed description of those error codes like you show, do you have a link to that Manual you used?

Failing to find a definitive answer to my situation online I decided to call Canon Tech Support (1-800-652-2666). They start at 10am Eastern time so don't call earlier than that.

There is a couple of minutes while the automated voice menu operator tries to figure out what model printer you have and once that is done it switches you over to Tech Support. I found that if you press the # symbol quickly three times you can bypass her and it will send you to a Human who will have to transfer you. All told including the muzak it took about 5minutes to reach the tech rep.

After explaining my situation he had me insert the installation CD into my player to restart the installation, you can use this as a a guide: How to perform the wireless setup using a USB cable (Windows)
In the beginning of the tutorial it will tell you to:

If the USB cable is already connected, unplug it. If a message appears on the computer, click Cancel.

, but Steve, yes that was a bit of serendipity as that is my name also, told me it was okay to leave the USB cable attached to the printer, I'll explain below.

The only other differences to the tutorial and my re-install were:

• I already had the .NET Framework installed, that window did not appear for me.
• The software installation list only had the MP, and XPS drivers listed instead of the other six utilities originaly, I left the MP checked and the XPS unchecked, and
• Where it says Network Key my window said Router Password, in any case this is where you enter your router's security key, remember it is CaSe SeNsItIvE.
• It is up to you if you want to run the Extended Survey Program or Test Print. neither showed up for me. I went directly to the Installation Completed Successfully window. I exited out and I was done.

Steve explained that leaving the USB cable attached, the re-install will place a copy (Copy 1) of the printer installation in Devices and Printers and what will happen is our desktop will send any print jobs through the ethernet cable to the router and then wi-fi it to the printer. After some discussion I decided to leave both the original and copy1 installed because if we ever lose the router I can switch the default printer back to the original install and still have printer capability directly from the desktop.

He also mentioned that it would help if my wife would use the: Canon Easy-PhotoPrint App from the Google Play Store for her Galaxy and Nook. She downloaded it to both and the printer picked up and printed both test runs wirelessly and successfully.

There is also an Apple App, but since neither of her devices are iDevices she had to go with Google.

Steve was very helpful, patient, and he had a good sense of humor, I did forget though to ask him were he was from originally because he either had a British or maybe an Australian accent.

Total time for support call based in the Norfolk, VA area was 39minutes including the first 5minutes.

I was leaning towards it from the beginning, but after a HP printer problem I had where I ended up with 3copies plus the original, and that was with HP tech support I was holding off as a last resort.

It was nice that Steve took the time to explain what was happening and any consequences; before, during, and after it happened.
