Hey,

this is a bit of a strange post however is there anyway of seeing where the "bottleneck" is on a windows 7 install please?

the long and short of it is that I upgraded my i5 laptop to a swanky i7 quad core however the my new laptop runs slower and generally more "jerky" that the older machine.

All drivers are up to date and its the same with running movies, loading photos or just the overall speed of opening & closing window etc.

Anything I could try?

Thanks

That could have several reasons. One is the disk. If the old PC has a faster disk, that would make a difference. Another cause could be the amount of startup programs. For a test disable all the startups and see whether that makes a difference.

For a good speed test of a CPU, I would make a file conversion of the same video file on both systems. That will be a CPU job. If you use the Freemake Video Converter, you will get the timings at the end of the conversion. Use a video file of at least 100MB to get a good result.

As whs said there could be many reasons why your i7 is slower than the i5 your wife's machine has. Check the speed of your HDD. Some spin at 4200,most at 4600 to 5200,or 7200 rpm. Top of the line ones run 10000 rpm. You can use Speccy to find out your speed, or many other free tools. Speccy - System Information - Free Download

You can also do these if you haven't already : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html

I wholeheartedly recommend Freemake also. Excellent program and free.
