Wifi Range Extension

Hello,
I am having some trouble trying to extend the range of my current wireless router. It is a ASUS wl-520gc. My laptop and Ipod Touch have trouble connecting to wireless in some points in the house.

I do have a D-link dir300 with DD WRT custom firmware that I installed, but since it is an atheros chipset I can't figure out how to use it as a repeater.

Any ideas at all that won't cost me $100?

This looks like a toy but I built three of these and they do make a difference! It's a great rainy day project if your allowed to play with sharp scissors...lol

Then try all the different channels as there will be several that work better than the others at holding a strong signal.

I used heavy duty presentation paper stock and then used double faced tape on the stock and stuck it down to the foil. Use razor blade to make the cuts and scissors to cut out all. If you take your time it comes out looking kinda cool at least mine did. I was very careful not the wrinkle the foil. Other wise a repeater works of course but try this first to focus the waves towards the weak area's.

Yes, to use DIR-300 as a wired repeater you need
1)enable "access point" function
2)disable UPnP
3)disable DHCP server
4)leave WAN port empty
5)connect LAN port of DIR-300 (not WAN) to a LAN port on your current router.

This is what I found so far for setting up the DIR300 as a wireless repeater.

Thanks Chev, My only problem is, if I run a cord from my current wifi router to the dir-300 it kind of defeats the purpose.
Its really easy under a broadcom chipset but I can't find suitable instructions for Atheros. I did try those set of instructions, but it didn't work I will try again.

If you can't run a cable then you need to use bridge mode rather than AP mode. In bridge mode it would allow you to plug into the bridge for a LAN connection but the bridge itself is wireless. I'm just not sure how well your DIR300 will work for this.

Obviously using a dedicated access point/bridge is the best way to do this. I use the Dlink DAP1522 myself.

First they are disabling DHCP on the DIR300 router.

After that you need to use the default gateway IP address from your other router "not the Dlink DIR300" and put that default gateway IP into the DIR-300's DNS settings. That way, the DIR300 will reference the other router's default gateway IP through it's DNS so as to use DHCP from the other router.

You might try googling around for more precise instructions.

I'm not sure how much you know about DD WRT, but for some reason Wiwiz is detecting my AP, but Site Survey doesn't see it.
