WIFI USB Adapter

I need an adapter to enable a LAN via Remote Desktop between my two rigs running W7 x64 Pro. I got to thinking about using a USB adapter, in lieu of a PCI controller, primarily for ease and simplicity, but have never dealt with either option before. Are USB adapters equal to PCI adapters, or is one better than the other? Which ever I use will have to talk with my ZyXel X550 router.

EDIT: The LAN will be operating in a permanent range of ~12 feet, going through one wall. I have no idea of how much bandwidth is required for RDP to function properly.

Do not go with a dongle, a usb network adapter... I recently bought a Belkin USB adaptor and it has caused me so much stress and after two weeks is still not installed. My intial advice would be to stay wired but if that is not an option a wireless card in a PCI has a better advantage...running something as fiddly as a network through a USB port kind of seems wrong to me. Although I have no experience of network PCI cards I'm sure they beat the hell I had with my Belkin dongle.

I tend to think of a dongle as a cable interface, rather than a device that looks something like a flash drive, but am not positive of the definition. Although you haven't solved your problem, I'm wondering if you know what the root cause is...driver, basic USB functions, or ?.
