Hello,
Today I had an error message while booting up my vista machine saying that it could not locate the USER32.dll file. If i upgraded to 7 using the windows 7 upgrade disk, will it fix it? I dont have a vista installation disk, and i cant find any vista disks where i currently am.

Thank You,
Teddy

Is this a persistent error for you?

It is likely related to an application or driver which is erroring. Look in Event Viewer>Admin View to find the error and google its exact wording and number to find how others have solved it. Look closely for the app which is said to cause the error and reinstall or repair it.

Sometimes running SFC will fix these: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

More info: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/user32-dll-not-found-missing-error.htm

If you decide to upgrade to Win7, I would do a clean install to start fresh without importing Vista corruption: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

TKoomen- Welcome to the Windows 7 Forums! Do you have some more detailed computer specs (CPU, RAM, etc.) which might be critical to a Win 7 upgrade?

Try tapping F8 at bootup to get Advanced Boot Tools. Is there Repair My Computer on the list which has the same tools?

If not try Last Known Good Configuration, or try booting into Safe Mode to use the troubleshooting steps given earlier.

Ive been doing that all day, safe mode is only a black screen with safe mode on each of the corners, last know config doesn't work either, the error pops up and prevents it from doing anything.

Is there a recovery partition? Look for the key given on first boot screen to Run Factory Recovery. If it's not there, then look in the Manual at the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer. We can help you find it if you need it.

Unless it gives you an option to copy out your data, it will overwrite it unless you copy it out yourself using a Rescue Disk. You can download Free Paragon Rescue CD from their site here: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/
