I have a XFX GeForce 9800 GT installed on my Asus P5N-E in one of my two PCIex16 slots, I also have a HD 4350 ATI Radion that I would like to install so I can use the hdmi output to my receiver. I have to hold off on getting a HTPC for a bit. Soon I hope.

Thanks

Hi ZooMan.......;)

the mobo you have is an ''SLI'' board as im sure your aware, they obviously wont work in tandem, & i don't think they'll work independantly of each other either as it would require 2 different drivers...:(

just buy a ''DVI to HDMI'' dongle

i could be wrong but i don't think it will work.

I could also be wrong, but I vaguely remember reading that it was possible with Seven that you could have two different brand of cards installed and running independently. (non SLI/CrossfireX)

For example you could have an ATI card as your display adapter and a nvidia card solely for physx processing.

Even if that scenario is true, I honestly don't know if using an ATI card for sound would work. You could always try :)

there is a way to force physX through ATI, but im not sure if the ability to run both cards independently exists..??

as Smarty says you can always try it, the worst that will happen is a re-installation of the primary drivers if it all goes wrong. ;)

Apparently it was possible to use an ATI card for display and a nvidia card for physx:

Well for all those who have have used Nvidia cards for PhysX and ATI cards to render graphics in Windows 7...All that is about to change.

Since the release of 186 graphics drivers Nvidia has decided to disable PhysX anytime a Non-Nvidia GPU is even present in the same PC. Nvidia again has shot themselves in the foot here and showed they are not customer oriented. Since they are pushing Physx this will not win over any ATI fanboys with this latest decision.

Here is a copy of the email I received from Nvidia support confirming what they have done.

"Hello JC,

Ill explain why this function was disabled.

Physx is an open software standard any company can freely develop hardware or software that supports it. Nvidia supports GPU accelerated Physx on NVIDIA GPUs while using NVIDIA GPUs for graphics. NVIDIA performs extensive Engineering, Development, and QA work that makes Physx a great experience for customers. For a variety of reasons - some development expense some quality assurance and some business reasons NVIDIA will not support GPU accelerated Physx with NVIDIA GPUs while GPU rendering is happening on non- NVIDIA GPUs. I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused but I hope you can understand.

Best Regards,
Troy
NVIDIA Customer Care"

Good work Nvidia. I was toying with the idea on getting a nvidia card for physx when I upgrade my rig

Running an ATI card was also the workaround in XP (doesn't work in Vista, at least until it gets WDDM 1.1) for running multiple monitors when running two Nvidia cards in SLI,

Dual monitors and SLI (3 Videocard Solution) - NVIDIA Forums

until Nvidia finally fixed it in the drivers.

smarteyeball, that will also still work, but only if you use the 185 and down drivers. Whole things comes across as a brilliant move by Nvidia's marketing department, or more like the spoiled little kid taking his ball and going home. Probably has something to do with ATI coming out with DX11 cards in September, with Nvidia's slated for sometime early next year (Q1 from what I have seen).
