Will a Windows 7 Pro key Activate Windows 7 Ultimate?

I am a student and I recently purchased Windows 7 Professional through the $30 student program. However, I have been running the beta and have heard that there are some issues regarding upgrading from Beta which is the Ultimate edition to a lesser edition (ie Pro). I have access to a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate... but I don't have a genuine key for it, however I do have a genuine windows 7 Pro key. Will the windows 7 Professional key activate windows 7 Ultimate?

No... you will need an Ultimate key for the Ultimate disc... If you have a full version of Windows 7 Professional, you can do a clean install, but you will need to reinstall your apps... Be sure you backup your data if you decide to do this..

When you purchased your student copy it should have given you a link to a program to download your install DVD. That is how you get the disk. Now burning that into a DVD is a whole other story, but you need to download the software first.

Of course you can't activate Win7 Ultimate with a Pro key.

You can do a custom (clean) install of Win7 Pro. You could do that even if the student version was only an upgrade. (I've read that it's a full version.)

It may be possible to hack the release installer to permit an upgrade-in-place from the RC (release candidate) to Win7 Pro, but I've not done it. I'd recommend a clean install, even if there was a supported upgrade path.

Well I don't understand the problem then. Here's the way I see it: go download this disk format your hard drive and install it. Quite trolling the internet for the answer to a stupid question. When you installed the RC you must have or should have thought in the back oh your head that you will have to do a clean install at some point. You've spent more time typing and reading post then it takes to install 7. There that's my opinion and the solution to your problem.

The bigger question is why would you want to upgrade from the RC version? Do a full, clean install so you have the best possible system when it is completed. I can hear the follow up question, but no, it doesn't take too long or too much work to do a clean install.
