Will burn DVD+RW but not DVD+R, why?

Hi, I’ve owned an LG GH24NS50 DVD burner for about six months. Recently I found that it is unable to burn DVD-R or DVD+R under Windows 7 Ultimate x64. It will burn a CD-R and curiously works fine with DVD+RW. I am updated to the latest “XP-01” firmware. When I try to burn files to a non-rewritable DVD, I get a write error. Happens with Windows 7 native burner and with ImgBurn. Is there something I can do to solve this problem? Thanks.

RWs burn at a slower speed. Reduce the burning speed to 50% or 25% and see what happens.

The problem could also be software related. I had to change my burning software to get rid of burn failures.

Have you tried a different brand of disk? The dye-change medium used by disk manufacturers varies slightly from brand to brand, and some drives work better with disks from one/some manufacturer(s) than others.

Thank you for these suggestions. I had tried lowering the write speed but I guess I was not patient enough or didn't try slow enough. Just got it to work at 4x.

ok. you can also try Dwarf's suggestion by using different Brand disc. Some cheaper ones are CR** and don't work at higher speeds. If the problem still occurs with various disc at high speed then it’s either a hardware or software issue.

To rule out the software or know if it’s the problem you can:

1. Check your burn setting. Buffer, disc-at-once , track at one, format, etc.
2. Try different softwares. Some softwares don’t like some drives. I recommend not installing all at once. That may land you in more problems
3. (Personal preference) I don’t like burning software that "steps on the gas" 0 to 24x in 3 secs, no. I think the best designed software slowly increases the speed of the disc.

So, check these out, and if the high speed is still not working you may have a hardware issue
