Will changing username/computer name effect wifi functioning?

I am having one hell of a time getting my new camera's (Panasonic FZ1000) wifi to recognize my computer. During the setup I can get as far as entering the computer's name, username and PW, but keep getting rejected with "wrong username or pw." I definitely know that the PW I use is the correct login PW for my PC, however I'm thinking that the problem may lay with either the username or computer's name. Before I go mucking around changing names, I'd like to know if I do make changes will this effect my wifi hookups. The computer in question is my desktop (main computer), I have a portable PC and TV/Bluray player associated with the modem/bridge...obviously I don't know much about wifi hookups so I can't better explain the hookups. BTW, it appears that I have two different usernames. One is the name that appears in the upper right hand corner when seleting the start icon and the other comes from this:

2. In the Command Prompt, type “set username” and press Enter
3. Your computer login name will be displayed after the "username=" tag.

And if I have to use the latter one (just above), then it presents an entry problem within the camera. This name is two words and the camera's entry keyboard doesn't allow for spaces, so I'd have to change the name to a single word.

EDIT: Actually, I have the feeling that I have confused computer name with username. Hopefully, this will be straightened with an answering reply

Right click Computer (Desktop or Start Menu) and select Properties. Computer name is listed there.
Also in cmd write: echo %username% (this will give username)

Changing the computer name might require to redo network shares and the like, an annoyance at most.
Changing the username now won't change the login name, only the displayed name will change. So you are at a loss there.

However, you can create a new user account with the appropriate naming scheme and give due permissions to do the job. And create a shortcut to the folder from your main account.

I don't know what kind of access is required by the camera, is it only for copying the content?

I think you have cleared up a lot for me. When doing the wifi set up, my username (as suspected and found with your input command) is two words. There are no provisions within the camera's keyboard for a space. So, most likely, when I entered two words instead of one, the username was not recognized, and thus the failed link-up with the computer due to an improper username.

This suspicion was the reason that I also asked if changing the username (from two to one word) would screw up my wifi connections. I'm going to go ahead and change the username and if the wifi screws up, I'll just change the name back to its original name.

However, you can create a new user account with the appropriate naming scheme and give due permissions to do the job. And create a shortcut to the folder from your main account.

It's for sending stored pictures to my computer via wifi.

Big problem now is that the pathway to permanently changing the username doesn't exist in Window7 HP. Have to go into "computer management" and open "local users and groups," but this folder doesn't exist in window7 HP???

Been with Panasonic tech to discuss problem with camera. Indeed, my camera's keyboard for the input of the username has its "space" icons greyed out, whereas the tech confirmed that they should not be greyed out. They are supposed to get back to me on Monday, hopefully with a fix. Of course, I could just add another acct with a one word username to the computer, but I'm not sure how to work it. That is, adding the new acct itself seems easy enough, but when the camera communicates with the computer and I go to download the pictures to the computer, will the pictures find the established share folder to store the pics?

It should have no problem saving to the shared folder. Should go like this:

- Create new account (say, camerasync)
- Add camerasync to share permissions with full control (read/write) rights (right click share folder, properties, sharing tab)
- Add camerasync to NTFS permissions with full control right (right click share folder, properties, security tab)
- Configure camera to connect to the shared folder with user camerasync.

Takes 10 minutes tops to try.

As who knows when Panny will get back to me, I've decided to go ahead and create a new user. However, I'm not too good at this and have run into a problem that I hope you can further help me with. Creating a new user (standard) went easily as I simply followed the SevenForums tutorial. I logged off from my Administrator user and tried to log onto the new user (camerasync, BTW was a good choice) and got the following error message:

User Profile Services service failed to lon on
User profile can not be loaded

Also, I might add, when creating the new user, I failed to follow your instructions about adding camerasync's share permissions or its NFTS permissions. Although I simply forgot to do this, in truth, I didn't know where to find the object to which these operations were to be performed. I can do the operations, but don't know where that file is located.

Hmm, ok, first thing see http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...-failed-logon-user-profile-cannot-loaded.html is you can fix user logon issue

report back

Edit: Since this is a brand new account, login with your current account and just delete it from user account (Control Panel - User accounts) and then recreate camerasync. Then logoff and login with camerasync, see if it works. If not, then see the link above.

Looking at the suggested tutorials makes me think of a can of worms. There are a lot of actions to perform that could possibly screw up the computer more. BTW, I don't think (although it is possible) that I had committed any of the error causing actions in the tutorial. Before trying any othe the tutorial further, I would have to keep a day open (and get my head ready) to digest and make sure that I followed everything to the letter. So, for the moment, maybe I'll just sit back and wait for the Panny tech to get back to me and hope he'll have an easier solution to my problem. Worst comes to worst, I just won't be able to use my desktop computer for the wifi transfer of pictures (at least there are other ways to transfer.)

Just heard back from Panasonic. The space icons on the username/pw fields are, indeed, inactive. Panny suggested that I just put in my two-worded username (this doesn't work!), or change the username on the computer...

Just create another account, by the way is C:\Users\default still there? It may cause such error if you deleted it in the past.

Hmm, just remembered something. You don't need to login with an account to set its share and NTFS permissions.

Try this and see if it will work - it worked in my test setup (you can change names to whatever you like):

- recreate the "camerasync" account if you deleted it
- create a new folder "panasonic" inside My Pictures.
- right click panasonic and properties, switch to security tab
- under "group or user names" click edit, add, write "camerasync" without "" and click full control under Allow. Apply. Ok.
- switch to sharing tab, advanced sharing, check "share this folder"
- click permissions, click add, write "camerasync" and Ok,
- give full control under allow, apply, Ok
- ok out

- now configure your camera to connect to the share with:
Username: camerasync
Password: whatever you have specified while creating the account

If you encounter a problem, try creating a different user (doesn't need to be admin with above procedure), no need to login, just follow the above steps

Report back please if any step doesn't work for you

Followed your instructions to a "T," and yet still get the same error message stating the either the PW or username was incorrect. I didn't set up a new user account because when I originally tried to set up "camerasync" as a new user account, the setup was a continuous failure. However, I found out that I already had a "Guest" account and used that one to follow your instructions. I don't remember when this account was set up, but I do know that it had no PW associated with its opening. So, after having everything set as instructed, I tried to link up via wifi, and still got the same error message. The only thing that I can think of is that the Guest account didn't have a PW, so my input to the camera for ussername was Guest and I never entered a PW (as there was none). Maybe the account needed a PW, but i doubt it. What gets me is that when friends or family come over to the house and want to hook up to my wifi, I give them the encrypted code and they hook up...what is the problem with this camera???

Sorry for returning back a bit late.

While searching I came across your thread FZ1000: Need help with Wi-Fi hook-up: Panasonic Compact Camera Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

It seems you have successfully connected to the wireless router.

EDIT: Just got a little further in that I have now entered the correct encryption code, selected the correct PC, BUT username and password again were noted to be incorrect (don't know which one or both). Again, I have seen two different definitions of username. One comes from Start>upper right hand corner and the other comes from Start>cmd>C:\users\xxx yyy. I used both, but I think the latter one isn't right as it is two words and when typing it in the camera, there was no "space" character???

You have done correct up to that point, so do it again (Select SSID of wireless, and enter pass-phrase). Make sure password for camerasync is alphanumeric (only numbers and letters, no signs). Also is your PC's workgroup name is workgroup? Computer - Properties shows that name. Now, enter camerasync for user and it's password.
