Solved Will CPU swap affect OEM Win?

I have two systems, one with an i7 and another with i5. The i7 system motherboard has some problems and I'm considering swapping the CPU's. Will that affect the OEM Win 7's and activation?

Even if it does, a simple phone activation will sort it, I have had to do it a few times, takes like 5 mins.

It won't affect it. I upgraded my i3 to an i5 and all is well.

No problem Jack. As long as you leave the mobo in place, you can exchange everything else without effecting the activation. I just did that recently on a friends HP and the system rebooted right up - has been running since.

Thanks, I was concerned because of the OEM version of Win 7. I know it wouldn't be a problem with a full retail version. The OEM's tend to be picky as is Microsoft at times.

I have an OEM version of Win 7 myself.

afaik, the thing used for activation is the mobo. As long as the mobo remains the same it shouldn't annoy you.

When I built my i5 system with all new parts I moved my Win 7 to it from my i3 system. I clicked on activate now from the system page and it went through. I put my old Vista OS retail in my i3 system though.

It might be that I was using the i3 on my new build and installed Win 7 then. Later did I upgrade to an i5.

I just did a CPU swap with a W7 OEM machine. No issues, save for the need to reactivate. Which might have been b/c I also swapped the MB.

One thing to keep in mind - RAM. If the i7 chip has a max memory of 64 bit, and the i5 a max of 32, and if you have more than 32, you will either a) wind up with 32, or b) run into some issues. Not sure which, tho....

Don't forget motherboards have a limitations on memory too. Like mine, it'll only see 16 gigs of memory even though my i5 can see 32 gigs.

I think what will happen for example 64 gigs on an i5 it'll just address 32 gigs and ignore the rest.

Memory is not a problem. My current i7 system has 16GB and the i5 has 8GB. But, both are Z77 motherboards and capable of more than 16 GB. After the switch and I make sure the OS is activated, I'll also swap memory.
